About this deal

Set in the depths of the English countryside, it’s about a detective whose marriage has failed and who leaves the city to get back to nature and solitude.

Het nieuwe leven bevalt Jake prima en hij weet zich goed te vermaken zonder alle luxe van zijn leven in London. If you intend to listen to this while you are doing something else then you will probably enjoy it, but if you give it your undivided attention, then you might find the pace of the storyline frustrating. You got a good mixture of characters from the taciturn to the dodgy to the somewhat aggressive which adds to the atmosphere. One of those books where you drift along slightly confused throughout because it’s so dull you haven’t kept track of what time of day any action is taking place (aside from the protagonist’s morning routine which we hear about frequently), or the names of secondary characters because they are so two dimensional they blur together.

But the principle is really: person leaves a messy marriage and personal tragedy and the city and connected life and goes and lives somewhere more sedate, more desolate, and then starts to find a new life, meets a woman, finds a new experience and, at the same time, is involved in solving crime. Death Under a Little Sky (HarperCollins) is journalist Stig Abell’s first novel and a joyful dive into the detective genre. The article argued for "gunships sending these boats back to their own country", and described migrants as "like cockroaches".As you know I’m always on the lookout for debut Crime Novels and when I saw Death Under A Little Sky, I was immediately drawn in by the beautiful cover and the premise. This is a beautifully written and very accomplished debut novel as you feel as if you are in the scenes, walking in the landscape or sitting in the wonderful library at Little Sky. Veel zaken zijn voor vele jaren betaald en er is zelfs een bankrekening op naam van Jake waar hij van kan leven. However I would be interested to read another novel by the author, to see how his writing develops in the future. Motherhood drains her – “soon all of Eve’s time was spent waiting, waiting, waiting for the day to pass” – until the new classics teacher, Gabriel Easton, and his wife, Fen, arrive.

Though Covid isn’t mentioned, the book captures really nicely the atmosphere of those first months of the pandemic, when self-sufficiency was back in fashion, people stayed home and learned to do basic things, and let their hair grow long.

You have to hand it to the Scottish government: the deletion of WhatsApp messages is good preemptive news management, whether accidental, by default or deliberate. I’m a bit of a newbie to the crime detective genre and the pace was a slow burn, but I can confirm I was satisfied with how the plot escalates as the case draws to a head, the last few chapters had me gripped and the realisation over what’s been happening in the calm, cosy, peaceful village is unsettling to say the least!
