About this deal

I really like it when it expands my sense of possibility, and whets my appetite to go deeper (epistemic-me).

This is a lavishly illustrated collection of old and new oddities from around the state, including cryptids, ghosts, cave mummies, UFOs, roadside attractions, the Melungeons (what’s a Melungeon? He quotes the authors and studies you've read about elsewhere, but where they had better context, and name drops every book and entity from The Odyssey to Google.

Today we spend vast sums trying to recreate the first instants of creation in particle accelerators, out of pure desire to know. In his essay on the need for you to bring curiosity back into your adult life, Leslie will act as your ‘handler’. I love how this book is told from the point of view of the little robot, it makes you feel like you are reading about a real person, although in some ways Curiosity is far more advanced than any human could ever be.Even though Curiosity is a different Mars rover, this book contains a lot of the same information as that found in The Might Mars Rovers: the Incredible Adventures of Spirit and Opportunity and I felt that book covered things a little bit better. Zurn developed these archetypes by looking back through the history of western intellectual thought. I was hoping for a more detailed discussion of curiosity, particularly how to _cultivate_ curiosity, but it wasn't there. While it conveys a lot of information and has more pages than many picture books, most pages aren't very wordy and so it might also appeal to some pre-kindergarten-aged children too.

Curiosity combines a great story with educational facts, it would be the perfect book for a school library as well as one to have at home. However, I have to confess that I have plunged into a kind of reverse Eve-guilt many, many times, being too tired and distracted to engage in the curious questions I have been asked. Just like the twins’ interest in Ole Worm, the book’s multidisciplinary approach was informed by their childhoods. This book challenged one of my most dearly held beliefs: that progressive education (like Montessori) is a Good Things.A spin-off of Kossy’s zine of the same name, Kooks is a kind-spirited examination of several conspiracy theorists, aspiring cult leaders, and miscellaneous cranks. After reading the first 20 pages, I sensed that “Curious” would be an especially-memorable reading experience. The author frequently uses the analogy of puzzles versus mysteries to illustrate the difference between diversive of epistemic curiosities. It's infuriating, but we need to give young people a solid grounding in dates and times tables and capitals and all that. Oh, sure, big-time heroes like Charles Lindbergh and Madonna hail from here, and so does President Gerald Ford, but do they compare to superhero Captain Jackson, who strolls around town in a purple cape doing good deeds?
