About this deal

After attending two Art Schools, she travelled for six months, still unsure about which career to embark upon. a mish-mash of several people’s mothers; one a tightrope walker, one a magician’s assistant and the other was just one of those very capable people who never seemed fazed by anything. She is joyful and hopeful and energetic without being stupidly sentimental; she is funny and real in her disappointments and worries but doesn't give up.

Although I had studied illustration for a year, alarmingly I had no knowledge of even the most basic things. I had found a sympathetic and exciting editor in Francesca Dow – who managed to improve my work without deconstructing it – and I had found a supportive publisher in Orchard Books. In 2009, Child signed a new six-book deal with HarperCollins for the release of her Ruby Redfort series.Initially fictional, the Ruby Redfort series was later written by Child, with the first book published in 2011. Perfect for getting 8 to 12 year olds in the Christmas spirit” was written in one review I read… well, it was perfect for getting this 39-year-old into the Christmas spirit! The one and only Clarice Bean is back to save her family’s Christmas in this sparkling story of joy, goodwill to all peoplekind, and some very Clarice catastrophes, perfect for sharing with all the family! Most of these things are just bigger for children because they haven’t learnt to deal with those situations so they seem much more scary.

In 2000 she won a Kate Greenaway Medal for I Will Not Ever, Never Eat a Tomato (2000) and a second Nestlé Smarties Book Prize in 2002 for That Pesky Rat (2002) . I never felt completely engaged but I could see this being a great book for children just starting to read chapter books. I was interested in (textile design, furniture design, children’s products, animation, film, scriptwriting, book illustration, ceramics etc) – I thought choosing one would mean missing out on all the others. The placement of the type is far too complicated but that I think is no bad thing – better to get the idea across and pare it back later. Next year she won the Greenaway Medal for the first Charlie and Lola book, I Will Not Ever, NEVER Eat a Tomato.

We publish a Literature Newsletter when we have news and features on UK and international literature, plus opportunities for the industry to share. She suggested that I send my portfolio to her business manager, to see if she had any advice or even the vaguest idea about what I should be doing. Before writing and illustrating children's books Child started her own company 'Chandeliers for the People' making lampshades. Utterly Me, Clarice Bean - novel - Clarice has to do a dreary book project but there's a prize she wants to win. Other characters who feature in the stories are Charlie’s best friend Marv (who lives in the flat downstairs) and his sausage dog, Sizzles; Lola’s best friend Lotta; and Lola’s imaginary friend, Soren Lorensen.

a] In the same year she wrote her first children's novel, Utterly Me, Clarice Bean, one of 39 books nominated by the librarians for the Carnegie Medal. She and her slick side-kick butler, Hitch, foil crimes and get into loads of scrapes with evil villains, but they're always ice-cool in a crisis. It has been immensely popular -again, with both adults and children - and the characters now feature on numerous types of merchandise for children. Everything we learn about her family is filtered through her – what she says isn’t necessarily completely accurate, it’s just her take on things.

They engage in imaginary games and outdoor play, rather than being entertained by adults or playing computer games. I stopped writing to a formula and instead wrote about something I was interested in, with the result that I stumbled upon my own way of writing. The first book in the series, Ruby Redfort: Look into My Eyes was released in September 2011 in hard back, with the paperback version released in July 2012.
