About this deal

We find out that Leo left Harris alone and he was scared – that’s what Allie is holding over his head. A compelling murder mystery told with warmth, humor and enough red herrings to keep even the most seasoned crime reader guessing. The cut on his face wouldn’t have killed him either, but might have been enough to trigger the heart attack he ended up having that killed him. In October 2016, the French translation of I Let You Go ( Te Laisser Partir) won "best international novel" at the Cognac Festival Prix du Polar awards.

Back at the station, Allie confronts Leo about the lawsuit he is taking against her for custody over Harris. The whip-sharp and deeply likeable Ffion leads the investigation, introducing us to a cast of brilliantly realised suspects. Layers of historical and social context deepen the allure of this icy murder mystery set in North Wales. This author is mixing it up after many years of writing straightforward thrillers - man cop/lady cop team up after a “meet cute” from hell, the local color, the stifling bureaucracy, but she makes it fresh and it works!

The Last Party by Clare Mackintosh Summary and reviews of The Last Party by Clare Mackintosh

A volcanic eruption is quite another, for, as the journalist who does a framing voice-over narration for Brooks’ latest puts it, when Mount Rainier popped its cork, “it was the psychological aspect, the hyperbole-fueled hysteria that had ended up killing the most people. With a literal boatload of suspects-all with a motive to commit murder- and a victim so despicable it's hard to summon any sympathy for him, a good time was not had by anyone at The Last Party (except for the reader! He makes a rowboat for the twins to get in Rhys good graces and delivers it, assuming he has the business. Awkward doesn’t begin to describe the situation, but the two professionals find their investigative skills complement each other. Normally if any other authors created a slow burn murder mystery with a large of number characters, I would have a second thoughts to get into the story and I could stop reading to grab another book.Summary of plot: on New Year’s Eve a very rich, popular singer Rhys Lloyd is found death, floating in the freezing water of the lake, found by townies who want to swim in the lake as a New Year tradition. Also the time lines bounce back and forth to reveal little details of what lead to Lloyds death and eventually “whodunnit”, one could get a little lost as to whether something that happened at the New Year’s Party was being revealed, or an occasion further back in time that would reveal a new suspect, explain the actions of the suspects or the current investigation which also slowed the pace some as almost everyone involved with The Shore Resort or Mirror Lake/Llyn Drych seems to have a reason to want Lloyd dead – even DC Ffion Morgan who is investigating for the Welsh side. Leo and Ffion head to The Shores, they find out Johnty was doing coke with Ashleigh all night and had an alibi for the murder time. Seren goes to Clemmie’s lodge to talk to the twins and Caleb and let the twins know they need to bring their dad a sandwich to eat, per their mom’s request. It took me a while to get comfortable with the unfamiliar names, but once I sorted it out this was a five-star book in every way.
