About this deal

I am a 44 year old, home educating mummy, passionate about picture books, children's literature and learning through play. Raymond draws on his own experience to show how isolating it can be for a deaf child in a hearing world. My favorite page is when Little Bear with his newly acquired hearing aids discovers his new world is loud and he needs to get used to it. The device of using number repetition several times illustrates how those with a hearing loss need something repeated more than once.

The attention the authors gave to the small sounds that the bear feel including the crunch of snow as he walks along it, but also the silence. It was such a pleasure to meet you both, and I really appreciated how smoothly and professionally you ran everything. The title is based on the sort of misunderstandings that Antrobus is still prey to despite hearing aids and lip reading (as described in his poetry collection The Perseverance).Paula has directed two productions at Shakespeare’s Globe: Love’s Labour’s Lostfor the Globe to Globe Festival, as part of Deafinitely’s 10th anniversary celebrations, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. My 4 year old daughter (who is an advanced frequent reader) did not stay focused to get through the entire story - even after multiple attempts, which is quite rare for her. As with many picture books addressing specific issues, the main audience for this book will be children with a similar experience, who will surely delight in seeing the little bear wearing their hearing aids and learning to navigate the world. This striking world première from the nationally acclaimed British theatre company Deafinitely Theatre (The Vagina Monologues, Everyday and 4. The story is also a mirror for deaf children and their families and I know from my own autistic son and dyslexic daughter how incredibly powerful it can be to feel seen in a story.

Polly Dunbar’s black framed, gently sequenced, pictures help us join Boy Bear in understanding what is happening to him, and thereafter, how he might be helped. As they go to bed, reassured, the children, who present white, imagine their friends and diverse people around the world connected with invisible strings, promoting a vision of global unity and empathy. Then, one day, Dad Bear takes him to see an “aud-i-olo-gist,” and Little Bear learns that he has been experiencing deafness and will start wearing hearing aids.

He doesn't know the answer to this mysterious question but one day, Dad Bear takes him to an audiologist and he learns what the world sounds like. I haven't charted out my visits for the summer term, but I'm sure there are several in the south) and thanks so much for being so fantastic! Boy Bear can feel the rumbling and noise of the curtains and his dad’s footsteps when he is woken up in the morning. You feel sad for his friends and teachers, his family, who want to include him and talk to him but do not know how.Thereafter the setting with the silence of snow contrasting with the noise of Bear’s daily routine is familiar. It is an incredibly emotional journey for the reader and gives a tiny taste of how that journey might feel for the parent and child, a chance for us to look through the window and begin to understand and empathise so that we may better support families that we know.
