One day, the man follows him to a café, and when the narrator finally confronts him, he learns that the suspicious man is Doc Golightly—Holly’s much older husband.

After her divorce, Lillie Mae finally saw her chance to abandon her past life—AKA her child—and “make it” in the big city. Perhaps it’s Holly’s effervescent quality and her attempt to feel everything at once and nothing at all that continues to propel her forward in time. But he loves her, he notes, in the same way that he loved his mother’s cook or his childhood mailman.

Climax: While tending to the narrator’s wounds after a rough day of horseback riding, Holly is arrested in her own apartment building and taken to jail for helping a mobster run a drug ring from inside prison. Challenging the sanctity of heterosexual dominion, Capote is suggesting that the gendered strictures of who makes the money (men) and who doesn’t (women) might not be as enriching as the romance between a gay man and straight woman,” wrote Wasson.

In this book, "the wild thing" is a metaphor for Holly, a person who listens only to her heart, breaks the rules and doesn't really care about the future. In the same way, Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby also serves as a precursor to Breakfast at Tiffany’s, since it establishes an image of the kind of rich Americans whom Holly uses her beauty and charisma to win over. Sitting at a diner counter, Doc Golightly explains that Holly—whose real name is Lulamae—wandered onto his property in Texas when she was still a girl, having run away from nasty foster parents with her brother Fred.

But the show closed quickly, after lukewarm reviews, with complaints it was too downbeat and Clarke lacking the enigmatic insouciance of this most charming creation. Right away, the narrator recognizes it as Holly’s face, and Joe Bell tells him that Yunioshi was traveling in Africa when he saw this piece of art. Indeed, the war is constantly in the background of the book, as the characters make fleeting references to it.

Gradually, the living room fills with men who all seem surprised by the crowd, each one having thought Holly invited him exclusively. After much convincing and deliberations over script objections, Audrey Hepburn would eventually become the star to fill the shoes of Holly Golightly on the screen. However, she’s suddenly arrested for helping Sally Tomato run a drug ring, and she discovers in jail that she has lost the baby.

Over the next few days, the narrator keeps his distance, but he soon notices a strange man lingering outside Holly’s apartment. Shortly after that, she leaves the country, leaving New York and everything that happened there behind. That’s surely why this tour, despite actually featuring three actresses playing the character – the others being the lesser-known Emily Atack and Georgia May Foote – is very much publicised as ‘Pixie Lott in Breakfast at Tiffany’s’, a double till-ringer of classic movie and contemporary celebrity. Or, to put it in more modern terms: straight men want to be with her, straight women and gay men want to be her.

For there are major differences between the two – and it’s the film that has the most fans, that will bring gangs of girls to the stalls. Or, and the question is apparent, was my outrage a little the result of being in love with Holly myself? A modern alternative to SparkNotes and CliffsNotes, SuperSummary offers high-quality Study Guides that feature detailed chapter summaries and analysis of major themes, characters, quotes, and essay topics.

It’s just that she had no sense of time, nor conscience that that three hundred people had been waiting hours for her. The narrator falls victim to this ploy and, over the coming weeks, he takes an increased interest in Holly.
