The author does an excellent job of exploring the complex emotions and reactions of the characters, particularly Marah, Kate’s teenage daughter, who is struggling to cope with the loss of her mother. Through it all, Tully learns to forgive herself for the mistakes she has made, and the characters come to realize the power of forgiveness and the importance of family and friendship.Through the course of the novel, Tully and the rest of Kate’s family must learn to come to terms with their loss and find a way to move forward.

In an interview with Parade, Katherine Heigl, who stars as Tully and is also an executive producer, noted that Hannah had a few stipulations regarding staying true to the novel. Johnny realizes that he only exacerbated Marah’s depression by uprooting the family from their Seattle home. Anyone who believes in true love or is simply willing to accept it as the premise of a winding tale will find this debut an emotional, satisfying read.
