About this deal

catchphrase is believed to be an impersonation of Potter the Janitor (played by Deryck Guyler) from the television series of the 1970s, Please Sir! Cover quote “His grasp of human loneliness and longing is beautiful and comforting” – Marian Keyes (again). In the process of tracking the woman he comes to dub Satsuma, Gary finds himself stumbling his way into the midst of what appears to be a crime ring.

This was a book that I was looking forward to all year and inhaled when the magical publishing time arrived, still wanting to savour every moment. No one was more surprised than Bob Mortimer at the unexpected success of Gone Fishing, his BBC two-hander with Paul Whitehouse, now on its fourth series, in which the old friends sit on a riverbank ruminating on life and generally arsing about while attempting to land a fish. You hear it in his comedy, the way in which he goes about telling his story is unique, filled with ever so slightly skewed reasoning plus the odd cheeky extra observation thrown in to knock you off kilter. Also in 2005, Mortimer voiced the character of Father Nicholas in the animated BBC Three series Popetown. Britain, like Europe, is still under German rule, with Queen Wallis – widow of King Edward VIII – on the throne. I’d listened to their audiobook last year and discovered he’d had a heart bypass and also that he’d been a solicitor before he became a comedian.

After being commissioned, Shooting Stars ran for five series between 1995 and 2002, with a special anniversary edition broadcast in December 2008.Such humour isn’t everyone’s bag but I think there is enough promise in these first couple of chapters to bring enjoyment to all readers that pick up this original book. In 1997, in collaboration with Chris Rea, Mortimer recorded Rea's hit " Let's Dance" with his favourite football team, Middlesbrough.

If I had to guess, I’d say every single woman who owns a cat will have this pressed into her hands over the next few months. In October 2015 the pair cancelled the first leg of their live tour, 25 Year of Reeves and Mortimer: The Poignant Moments, after Mortimer underwent an emergency triple heart bypass.Wallis, who is miserable, paranoid and desperate for the liberty that only America can provide, claims to have a secret document which will bring down the Protectorate, and asks Rose to recover it from its hiding place … Brilliantly imagined and thoroughly chilling, this is a counterfactual tour de force. He tells the squirrel what he’s planning to do next and the creature, as ventriloquised by Gary, tries to talk him out of it. The ending I disliked a little and thought it all happened far too quickly, but felt it did provide a neat conclusion, if a little rough around the edges. Before listening to this the only thing I really knew about Bob Mortimer was his comedy career with Vic Reeves and more recently his Gone Fishing TV series with Paul Whitehouse.

In July 2002, Mortimer fought and defeated Les Dennis in the BBC's first Celebrity Boxing match, as part of Sport Relief 2002. In addition, my husband and I met while working at the Riverside, so you could say it holds a special place in my heart.

I loved that whenever I was reading it over night or while holding my sleeping baby I had to suppress quite violent giggles to keep from waking him.
