The parameter 0 ≤ l ≤ 1 {\displaystyle 0\leq l\leq 1} represents how far the point A {\displaystyle A} is located from the center of C i {\displaystyle C_{i}} . The distance that point B {\displaystyle B} traverses on C i {\displaystyle C_{i}} is the same as that traversed by the tangent point T {\displaystyle T} on C o {\displaystyle C_{o}} , due to the absence of slipping. Point B {\displaystyle B} , however, will travel on C i {\displaystyle C_{i}} , and its initial location coincides with T {\displaystyle T} .

The much-loved toy from yesteryear has now been turned into a range of different sets ready to capture the imaginations of a whole new generation – it's safe to say that Spirograph is going to be sticking around (and around, and around) for a good while yet! The pattern will eventually join up with where the pen came off the paper – and you will begin retracing lines you’ve already drawn. You don't need to worry about the outer rings slipping around as it's been designed with a self-contained ring and workspace – the paper just slots in between and is held in place so you can happily doodle away! If the gears get stuck – just help them along a bit, but overall, this is a nice option if you are struggling with the traditional Spirograph. Placing a pen in one of the holes and moving it around allows you to draw interesting patterns – the teeth of the circle and teeth on the cog will mesh to make the circle move and turn at the same time, and with the right pressure applied in the right direction, you can roll it around the inside of the circle, making interesting shapes. However, you can use any pen or pencil that fits in the wheel hole, whether it came with the set or not. Depending on the relative circle sizes and the pen-hole distance, you’ll get various different types of shape – some closer to the pointy hypocycloid, and some closer to a circle; when the hole is near to, but not on the edge, the pointy ends become thin loops; when the hole is close to, but not at the centre, it’s like drawing a circle but slightly missing where you started, so you get something fairly smooth but that wiggles in and out from the centre gently. This is because the number of teeth on the cog, and the number of teeth on the hole, are both (hopefully) finite whole numbers, so there’s only a finite number of places and orientations the cog can be in. The holes on the wheel are not perfectly straight; rather, they are beveled to funnel the pen or pencil toward the paper. Popular in the late 18th century, these spiral devices used a rotating pencil to create spiralling patterns.

The original US-released Spirograph consisted of two differently sized plastic rings (or stators), with gear teeth on both the inside and outside of their circumferences.
