Mental Fitness by Ant Middleton | Goodreads

You know the enemy hasn’t been in that situation, so you go in feeling like you have the remote and can pause and play as you go. It’s a rare break in his diary from the commitments of his current speaking tour, Mind Over Muscle, a bustling schedule of back-to-back live shows across the UK, from Glasgow to Brighton.

If you’re obese and are struggling with your physical health, there’s no way your mental health won’t suffer too. But if you’ve got a body like a Greek god and haven’t spent any time building your mental fitness, you’ll find that that your ability to explore the outer limits of your physical potential will be severely limited. The ex-military man, 38, has also starred on the front cover of Men's Health and has made a career out of pushing his body to its limit. Ant has some solid things to say about acknowledging your emotions, learning from your mistakes, and taking control of your present. The lessons he echoes are crucial to not just a life demanding physical and mental toughness but generally any meaningful life.

As we began our descent, we all went through the routines that had become second nature to all of us over the course of the tour: checking weapons, making sure that all the straps on our Bergens were tight; exchanging glances with the guys sitting near us to make sure they were ok. A good book to read if you’re finding your place in the world, and I certainly wish it had been around 20-odd year ago. Whatever claims they might have made about their desire to protect ordinary Afghans from the foreign infidels who had come to their country in the aftermath of 9/11, they were parasites. Nothing groundbreaking but I wasn’t expecting that - he’s not a professional counsellor or psychologist.

I also found a lot of these self help revelations he made were AFTER the fact he messed up and doesnt seem to have real world basis or evidence that its worked for him. Maybe it was because many of the chapters I couldn’t entirely relate to, or quite simply read the chapter header and my instant reaction was either, “You’ve got to be kidding me”, or “No, thank you. However I found that the lessons /tips that flow from those stories are told in a rather disjointed and random way and are sometimes contradictory.
