A manga adaptation by Hiro Kiyohara was serialized between May 2010 and January 2012 in the issues of Kadokawa Shoten's Young Ace. Despite being the catalyst for Takako and the others attacking Mei in the anime and the main reason for her loneliness in the manga and novel, Misaki does not appear in the live action film, nor is she mentioned.

In the film, their relationship is considerably worse, as Kirika constantly discouraged Mei from socializing with her classmates, telling her she didn't need friends, and she shouldn't explain about her eye as people would judge her for it. Red Herring: Everything about her, right down to the way she appears and how others act around her, lead the audience to think Mei is some sort of ghost that only Kouichi can see. Kōichi, Izumi, Naoya and Yūya, along with fellow classmates Takako Sugiura and Junta Nakao, go to a beach resort to meet Katsumi.Replacement Goldfish: Yukiyo made a doll which resembles Mei to create a duplicate of the child Yukiyo lost during her pregnancy.
