About this deal

Gripping but my favourite thing is the humour - actual laugh out loud moments despite the shocking tale. Here, the narrative engine is a woman whose psychotic single-mindedness is admittedly interesting, but who has no personal involvement. There isn't an audiobook available that I could find, and I'm after reading this I'm sure the audiobook did help the last time I read a Hallett book. Gabriel, their charismatic leader had convinced them that they were angels in human form and the child was the Antichrist.

A sincere thanks to NetGalley, Viper books and the author for a advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. We cannot have more people gaining interest in The Alperton Angels and discover what has been hiding in plain sight all along. Tess Morgan is back home and making her dream of restoring Kilfenora House and Gardens into a reality. In her second book, The Twyford Code, I connected hard with the characters thanks to some clever twistiness and she still had the nice puzzle element, even leveled up a little. It combines the best aspects of the thriller and the whodunnit to present a challenging conundrum for readers to unravel. We thought that this was the last we'd hear about the cult that killed themselves when they thought they failed to murder the baby they presumed to be the anti-Christ, but we were wrong. The Grand Union Canal runs through Alperton and its towpath, is now part of the Grand Union Canal Walk. The author provided a steady drip of information and just as I thought I’d figured out what was going on, another twist was thrown at me. It gets increasingly dramatic and startling with some of the discoveries with an ending that is maybe unsurprisingly given what we learn though I love the ultimate dilemma!

Oliver seems to have fallen under Gabriel's spell and is becoming obsessed with supernatural spirits, angels, demons, and the Antichrist. In a conventional storyline the plot becomes gripping and exciting with each chapter we read especially when it is a mystery. It took me awhile to get the hang of the written format and the non-linear narrative that switched rather seamlessly - surprisingly - between the past and the present events. They are forced to unpick the facts from the fiction in the same way that readers must as they work through all the materials concerning the case.Amanda Bailey, a terrier-like true-crime author, is determined to dig up the truth as quickly as possible, because she’s on a deadline. I use the table of contents a lot, particularly in books like this where I go back and reread parts, and the title of section 8, impossible to not read.

Though the novel is a deep dive into how journalists work in the age of social media and how manipulators can pull vulnerable people into their orbits, it’s a mostly heavenly read. Like Hallett’s The Appeal (2022), this many-layered, highly complex, and imaginative novel rolls out its storyline in a non-traditional format. While I've read plenty of epistolary works before, this author's trademark is to notch things a bit higher, entangling the reader as deep in the mystery as possible, encouraging them to really root through the clues for the truth. She was an accomplished wordsmith and absolutely wrote from her heart in a way not all true crime authors do.I much prefer writing in the first person, where I can jump into that character and see the world from their perspective.
