About this deal

One of the few books I've come across showing siblings behvaing amiably towards each other on a regular basis. With warmth and sturdy common sense, these attractive picture books introduce the verbs ``to give'' and ``to bounce. She wrote two novels for older children, Hero on a Bicycle, about a 13-year-old Italian boy during the occupation of Florence, and Whistling in the Dark, set during the Liverpool Blitz.

There's also a couple of other titles like Sally's Secret, and The Trouble With Jack, Moving Molly, and lastly Rhymes For Annie Rose (another of my favourites!

Why should the everyday tales of a four-year-old boy and his toddler sister Annie Rose so lift my spirits - as well as those of my two young children - at the end of a dog-tiring day? I found that the illustrations in this book really added to the story, and I liked the style that they were done in.

We're always happy to answer any questions or queries you might have, please get in touch using one of the methods below. She wrote and illustrated over 200 cherished children’s books, including the celebrated Alfie stories. Alfie is excited when he is invited to Bernard's birthday party, though he feels a bit nervous about going on his own.

She won the Kate Greenaway Medal twice and was awarded the OBE for her distinguished service to children's literature. Her first book - Lucy and Tom's Day - was published in 1960, and she followed it with, among others, Dogger, and the Alfie series. I think this story did a good job showing young children that panicking is not the solution, and the illustrations did an excellent job showing the emotions of Alfie and his family.

She has written and illustrated over 50 books and sold more than eleven million copies, won major awards and created some of the most enduring characters of children’s literature, was awarded an OBE in 1999 and has received the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal, twice. Young Alfie want to play with his sister and mother but instead ends up locked alone in the house with them on the other side. Alfie and Bernard wish that they could be friends with the most popular big boy, Ian Barger, but Ian never takes any notice of the little kids. In her lifetime, Hughes wrote and illustrated over 50 books for children, with her most popular being the Alfie series, and Dogger .Everybody is doing a day's work - just like those long-suffering mums pushing small children round in buggies. Dogger was a particular favourite in our household, with myself and my siblings able to relate to the attachment to a much loved soft toy, and understanding Dave’s feelings when Dogger goes missing.

Fun fact; I was so obsessed with these books as a small child that my mum eventually HID them all so I couldn't bring them to her and make her read them (We did have plenty of other books, so this wasn't such a hardship! Soon everyone in the street becomes involved in trying to rescue Alfie, but he has a plan of his own.

Fans of the other Alfie books and those meeting the family for the first time will be pleased by the real-life situations, jauntily depicted in Hughes's fresh-faced watercolors. Young children are able to find the extraordinary in every day ordinary scenes, like losing a beloved stuffed animal, helping your baby sister eat with her spoon, and going to a friend's birthday party.
