But the environment of the story is clearly one which betrays its medieval origins: a world in which women are to be bought and sold by the highest bidder (the sultan is happy to have his daughter married off to either Aladdin or the vizier’s son, depending on which of them can produce the more expensive gift – and he grants Aladdin permission to marry the princess without ever having met the young man).

DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp is heavily based on Aladdin, but with Huey, Dewey, and Louie replacing the title character. ALADDIN contains theatrical smoke and fog effects as well as strobe lighting during parts of the show. Disney’s spectacular West End musical, ALADDIN, is now touring the UK and Ireland until January 2025.The creators drew inspiration from the city of Baghdad in Iraq and then gave the city a fictional name. Aladdin and the Magic Lamp’ shares a number of plot features with a later European fairy tale written by Hans Christian Andersen in the nineteenth century: ‘The Tinder Box’. It stars Mena Massoud as the title character, Naomi Scott as Jasmine, Marwan Kenzari as Jafar, and Will Smith as the Genie. One of the many literary retellings of the tale appears in A Book of Wizards (1966) and A Choice of Magic (1971), by Ruth Manning-Sanders.
