I picked up A Soul as Cold as Frost while looking for a great Christmas read, and it definitely hit the mark.

We, as readers, enjoy this character for the pure and simple reason that the point of view character adores him. A Soul as Cold as Frost instantly transports you into a magical world that the whole family will adore. The crystal sphere tumbled from my mitt and my hand lashed out to catch it before it turned into a glassy splash on the sidewalk.

That’s not to say I’d remove a significant portion, but there were a few times when I felt it could have moved along a bit faster. I thought I was dreaming, but I couldn’t peel my stare away, even though all I could think about was running for my life. I scrambled after her, positive she was crazy and muttering on about a conspiracy she’d fabricated in her mind. Book two, A Heart as Red as Paint was just released last month, so you’ve got two gorgeously festive fantasies to dive into this Christmas, and the wait for book three, A Crown as Sharp as Pines, is only a few months! My back smacked hard against the sidewalk, my leather book bag flew half a metre, and my boots stabbed the air like a tipped cow.

There is a subtle Christian undertone to some of the story, in a very similar vein to Aslan in The Chronicles of Narnia, so if you’re a fan of Christian fiction you’ll love the added layer, but if you’re not looking for it then you won’t notice it’s there. The flock was their own blizzard of glittering feathers, their silken wings carrying them just above the human masses as they tweeted a melody in perfect unison like a well-practiced choir.

The Quarrel of Sword and Bone was a death sentence for anyone who stepped into the arena with the deranged Queen, whose soul had crisped to frost in an age long since past.
