About this deal

The 1658655-1 is a 9-position black standard D-sub Shielded Plug with tin-plated steel shell and glass-filled PBT/nylon insert. Unless it is an RCBO, a "normal" RCD to IEC 61008 (which is what most people are familiar with) will not detect overcurrent. Then use the following as a guide to select the correct fuse:3 Amp fuse for appliances up to 700 Watts,5 Amp fuse for appliances ranging from 700 to 1000 Watts,13 Amp fuse for appliances over 1000 Watts.

The piece of equipment the other end of the wire from the plug determines what size of fuse is required, not what the pug itself can take. Purchase either a 13A standard plug and fit with a 3A fuse and plug in to nearest socket or install a standard fused spur fitted with a 3A fuse and hard wire the flex to it.The power rating for a particular device is usually written on the back of the device or if not it should be in the instruction manual. Overloading one of these becomes apparent when the total amperage of the appliances plugged in exceeds the 13 amp in this extension lead. Be warned, if you are tempted to use something like a paperclip or piece of tinfoil wrapped around an old fuse or a nail, don’t. The plugs have either a 3 amp or a 13 amp rated fuse - It is very rare that you find anything inbetween although there are other fuses available.

It is extremely dangerous and could result in electrocution, a fire or total failure of your appliance. Voltage drop is the voltage lost through cables due to impedance - essentially when the voltage at the end of a run of cable is lower than at the beginning. If the fuses are blowing on power up or in use, and these are IEC leads, are they the correct leads for the appliance. Step 1: The first step of rewiring a plug is to cut back the outer sheath (black) of the flexible cable, to get access to the coloured wires underneath; give yourself plenty of wire to work with. Some kits may be specialised, offering different fuses for specialist work - for example in automotive engineering or plant maintenance.

After you have calculated this, it is a simple case of adding around 10% to the value and choosing the nearest fuse to match. My views would also be to replace like for like, the plug may be rated as 13amps, but there must be a reason why a 3amp fuse was installed by the manufacturer. The wires are cut to the wrong length– To be fully correct, the coloured wires should have been cut at better lengths so that the white covering is fully into the plug before it is secured. Unsurprisingly for such a widely used component, fuses are available in a multitude of models and voltage capacities for use in different industrial, manufacturing and electronic settings. If they are paying to get the lamps changes, you should change the whole lot including those still working.Generally these days, most new, domestic appliances come with a pre-fitted moulded plug that already incorporates either a 3Amp or 13Amp rated fuse. The standard UK plug is like no other in the world; it has three chunky, metal pins when most others just have two, and the plug in the main is bigger than elsewhere in the world – how can they get their electricity on such a smaller unit than us? Kettles have a wide range of wattages depending on if it is a slow boiling kettle, or a rapid boiling kettle. Top Tip from an expert: If the cable grip has a screw either side; remove one completely, and the other just enough so you can turn the grip 90 degrees (out of the way) – this will reduce the risk of losing the screws and will speed up the job for you, as it’ll be much easier to screw it all back together. The definition of a D-type fuse is a miniature circuit breaker that trips when the current exceeds the rated level by between ten and 20 times.
