The Pure Elan Connect+ isn’t going to win any awards for its design. It’s far from ugly, but compared to the faux leather and wood panelling that features in the design of rival DABs, the Stone Grey (an off-white) or Charcoal-coloured plastic chassis is utilitarian. Pure have been in the radio business for as long as I can remember. They were on the shelves when I worked my part time retail job during college around 15 years ago and they were very popular due to their decent build quality and audio performance. And that still holds true today. We’re taking a look at the Pure Elan Connect+ and first impressions are great! If receiving the preferred station via FM radio is difficult, and it is available online, an internet radio is a good choice. Which types of devices are there? DAB+ digital radio brings you a diverse range of great content in highly-detailed, digital-quality sound; much of which is only available on digital radio. Elan Connect automatically finds all available digital stations in your area for an easy listening experience, plus there’s FM radio for any station that has not yet gone digital. Smart internet radios: These devices are connected to the internet and offer additional features like the option to access streaming services, to control smart home devices or access devices via voice control.
It makes sense to acquire an internet radio if a Wi-Fi connection is available and the existing radio needs to be replaced. Internet radios also make sense for users who want to access a wide range of radio stations that are not available locally. It allows them to access programmes from different countries and regions. The internet also allows access to a multitude of podcasts and on-demand content, which is another benefit. Unlimited number of stations: Reception of up to 30,000 stations and streaming providers from all over the world via DAB+ technology. This is why this type of radio is often referred to as either WLAN radio or Wi-Fi radio. DAB and DAB+ radio - what’s behind it? With DAB selected as a source, we were able to tune in a plethora of digital radio stations in under a minute, each one with scrolling text and other station information nicely presented in a compact and colourful way. Stereo reproduction appeared to be accurate on FM, DAB and with Bluetooth, even though the radio has a single speaker. Not all DAB radio stations are broadcast in stereo and this would explain why some stations are still in mono when using headphones. Compared to FM technology, which is prone to disturbances and only offers a limited range, Wi-Fi allows you to access radio programmes and streams from all over the world via radio. What can be received via internet radio?Internet radios allow users to receive different types of radio programmes from all over the world, given they are available online. Here are some examples:
To browse the list of stations the forward/Stations button has to be pressed first. This opens the list of stored stations which can be browsed by turning the rotary knob left and right. A different station can be selected by pushing in the knob. This works well but if you forget to press the Stations button first you’ll find yourself changing the volume. Perhaps the clearest sound comes via Bluetooth streaming, which was a surprise (it’s so often the low point of DAB radios attempting to also be streaming devices). So if you mainly listen to podcasts that aren’t accessible via internet radio, then this unit could work well for you.Wi-Fi internet radios: These devices connect to the internet via Wi-Fi and allow access to a wide range of radio stations and podcasts. They usually have a larger display and offer more features than compact internet radios, such as the option to stream music from a smartphone or tablet.
