About this deal

Dominic Wilcox, a British designer and industrialist, has created the "One Foot Taller" glasses, which are essentially a pair of periscope glasses that let you see over the heads of people in front of you. Manufacturers tend to avoid titanium if at all possible, not just because it’s expensive but because it’s notoriously hard to work with. For example, a lens with a focal length of 200mm and a maximum aperture of f/2.8 has to have a front lens element that’s more than 70mm (or 3 inches) wide. And that's not including any manufacturing considerations.

Interestingly, Wilcox’s invention surfaced just in time when after Microsoft Surface challenged inventors to come up with 'extraordinary solutions' for 'everyday problems' for an exhibition in London.A periscope is a device for viewing things past obstacles. In this case, the obstacle is the camera itself. The mirrors bounce the light to the side, allowing for a greater focal length between the front lens and the focusing point on the sensor.

The glasses are created using a sheet of mirrored acrylic with a 45-degree bend, to ensure the smaller mirror can reflect the larger mirror, which faces outwards, giving whoever wears them a better view. Instead of opting for a series of lens elements controlled by electromagnets, they designed a single element “periscope” which reflects light multiple times to simulate a 120mm focal length. The laser light coming from the left is shifted onto a higher plane by the periscope lens system.

An inventor has created the ultimate concert accessory to solve all your vertically-challenged problems. Wilcox who certainly has gone through the struggle hence the invention said, “I was standing at a gig and turned to see a small woman dancing away but unable to see the band. This gave me the inspiration to design a way for people to see over obstacles such as tall people like me. Some people get their thrills from bungee jumping or scoring a winning goal at Wembley, but I get mine from coming up with creative ideas’’ Wilcox told the Mirror. So while titanium made sense for the outer shell, it didn’t make a difference for the midframe, a hidden yet mechanically complex aluminum part that all the inside phone components mount to. But how do you keep the aluminum midframe and use titanium for the perimeter? iPhone 15 camera screw, top. Equivalent iPhone 14 screw, bottom. A Great Design Undermined by Parts Pairing
