About this deal

I really enjoyed the ‘Before’ chapters, you could tell it was building up to something, and I wasn’t sure how it would play out. It had me guessing the entire way through. I wasn’t right in the slightest, although I did sort of guess motives. The unfolding of it all is quite hard to bear due to all of the loss throughout the book. I understand Ava’s problem with the entire situation. I have read and loved all of the Luc and Ava series so far. I think its quite hard for a writer of a series to keep up the suspense and thrill for so long, but Helen Fields has managed it and each book gets better. CHARACTER: Everything that has previously happened to Ava is weighing heavy on her shoulders and you see she is struggling. Fields is great at showing Ava struggle and her loyalty to her friends and work. I also love how the other characters try to support her. WRITING STYLE: Fields writing style is easy and engaging. I read 75% of this book in one sitting, as her words had me gripped to my seat. I have been a fan of Helen Fields and this series in particular for a number of years now. She has never disappointed me and with this book she delivers one of the most thrilling and gut-wrenching book yet.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Avon Books UK for an advance copy of One for Sorrow, the seventh novel to feature DCI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach of the Edinburgh Police. For the most part, the symbolic magpies suggest that only good things are going to happen. Whether silver or gold, the acquisition of wealth is not something that the average person is going to run away from. The first line, which alludes to oncoming sorrow, is the darkest in this version of the poem. In other longer versions of ‘One For Sorrow,’ the speaker mentions the devil, hell, and death darkening the overall tone of the song considerably.

Said murderer is organised, meticulous, a master manipulator, highly intelligent – and way ahead of the Major Investigations Team.A tense, fast paced book with so many factors in play. It was obvious that the parallel stories were connected, but Helen throws in many twists and turns before the truth is revealed.

Not just a police procedural, not just a psychological thriller, not just a few twists and turns, but all that combined and then put on steroids. That’s the best description I have for One for Sorrow by Helen Fields. This may be the most intense book I’ve ever read, and certainly is the most intense one I’ve read in the recent past. Not only is there good, solid police work shown being completed, complete with personality clashes and departmental divides, the psychological tension is enormous; and that’s before you get to the twist that turns the whole thing on its edge. This book started with a bang and just kept rolling, definitely a “just one more chapter” kind of story. The opening is very sombre but the author then goes straight in to two explosives scenes that have your heart racing. As the story develops the reader feels as if they are part of the investigation team, questioning exactly what has happened but more importantly, why? The writing is seriously clever, the actions of the killer make this book truly terrifying, but the twists add another level of surprise that truly leave you in awe and on the edge of your seat. In addition to her main characters, Field has a great cast of secondary characters, and it is always nice to catch up with them. Edinburgh also functions as both setting and character.

I loved how real this story felt! Its amazing to me really how an author can do what they do. And Helen did the dang thing with this one.

One For Sorrow (Poem + Analysis) One For Sorrow (Poem + Analysis)

One for Sorrow is compelling and fast-paced as a lone bomber creates chaos in Edinburgh. Luc and Ava are at a loss as to motive, but the deaths are devastating. The bomber targets police and ambulance workers, those who are there to help--adding another degree of horror to the chaos being inflicted.

But with the threat – and body count rising –Neither Ava nor Luc know whether they will live long enough to tell the tale… I had no idea where the author was going with Quinn’s story, but I think it is almost better than the bombing thread because it is so realistic. I found it harrowing and all too believable as it closely resembles an article I was reading today by coincidence. The focus of the story introduces us to very real but believable evil and the character is built up stealthily and expertly. There are also big questions and food for thought about whether actions are ever justified and some excellent and poignant psychological assessments and comments on life and grief.
