About this deal

I fell in love with you, didn't I, Sasha Antonova?" His laugh, the set on her jaw, they both said I love you, it's over, we're doomed. "I was always going to be trapped." The witty dialogue, exciting twists, and excellent pacing make this a witchy, mob-inspired adventure that will excite fans of V.E. Schwab and Leigh Bardugo.”—Booklist

One For My Enemy by Olivie Blake - Culturefly Book Review: One For My Enemy by Olivie Blake - Culturefly

She is called Baba Yaga, and of all of her many trinkets, her daughter remains the greatest treasure of them all.” Oh my sweet Masha. I think Masha's ending may have been the most bittersweet for me. Her grief and pain felt so deep and incredibly real. She deserved so much and got so little, and that completely ruined me. I'm glad she managed to find herself in the end rather than being completely lost to insanity. I'm happy that she at least got somewhat of a happy ending. Emphasis on somewhat. In modern-day Manhattan where we lay our scene, two rival witch families fight to maintain control of their respective criminal empires. I DO NOT CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS ABOUT MY BABY ROMA. I AM A ROMAN APOLOGIST, AND I FULLY UNDERSTAND HIS ACTIONS. All Roma did was for his family, even though he was always the least favorite Fedorov son. Yes he had flaws, made mistakes, but at the end of the day, Roma is the only one who would ever truly sacrifice love and all he has for family, and how could I ever despise him for that? The magic system is almost nonexistent in the book's first half. We don’t see any magical characters being magical, except for a hand-warming charm. The reader is left to desperately attempt to infer the extremely nebulous limitations of said magic system.

Need Help?

Oh Lev. I'll try to keep this brief because If I don't, I know I'll end up rambling on about my love and pain for sweet Lev. Lev was the best of the Fedorov brothers and imo all the characters in general. If you're looking for somewhere to start with Blake's writing, I scream from the rooftops that this is the one to start with. It is less complex than The Atlas Six without being simpler, if that makes any sense? It's an Urban Fantasy with some of the most beautifully written relationships I've read. Considering it was done so well over the span of a single book is even more impressive.

One for My Enemy Quotes by Olivie Blake - Goodreads

It was no whispered confession. It was no gentle murmur in the dark. It was the truth, plain and bare, and she wasn’t vulnerable for having said it. Instead, she wore her love like a shield, like armor, and he ached for her; for what she was to him; for what they might have been.” Dima, you never look around to realize the world goes on around you, outside you, in spite of you.” YA giant Clare makes her adult debut with a whirlwind epic fantasy featuring secret plots, ancient magic, and hidden identities. From New York Times bestselling author Olivie Blake comes an intricate web of love, magic, and rival witch families in New York City. There was no doubt that the twist of her coquette’s lips, however misleadingly soft, was meant to disparage him. So the set-up and all the references or homages? Good. The unique take so it didn't feel like a direct retelling? Even better. The twisty familial ties and bonds? Fun because neither side were the "good" guys. And those aforementioned characters? Insert heart here. But it was definitely too long, or too drawn out, and there was too much death and too much not death (IYKYK).

ONE FOR MY ENEMY is a little more straight-forward and other than being a classic retelling there isn't much pretension at all. Plus not only was it Shakespearean at it's core but it also had the delightful bonus of Russian/Slavic folktales with the inclusion of the Baba Yaga and Koschei monikers. So that was fun. Oh, also? Witches. There's a lot of good going on here. And we open with quite a bang.

The brief pause that passed between them was loaded with things neither expressed aloud nor requiring explanation. That time had passed was obvious, even to Lev. I swore, after trying and failing TWICE to read These Violent Delights that I was done with any kind of Romeo/Juliet retellings, but Blake reeled me in and wouldn't let me go until I had finished this, which is why it's midday and I'm only just thinking about starting work. It's also why I'm running on about 4 hours of sleep. I didn't want to put this down.

Lethally smart. Filled with a cast of brilliantly realized characters, each entangled with one another in torturously delicious ways, The Atlas Six will grip you by the throat and refuse to let go. Olivie Blake is a mind-blowing talent."—Chloe Gong, New York Times bestselling author of These Violent DelightsDimitri Fedorov, I already gave you my useless heart. Now, have everything else that matters. Have my loyalty, my right hand. Have everything that was once my mother’s and give me everything you once swore to Koschei. Give me all of you, take everything of me, and let’s see who stands against us then.” There were characters I liked and characters I didn’t, but my main issue is how fleshed out the brothers were compared to the sisters. Olivie Blake is a mind-blowing talent. " — Chloe Gong, author of NYT Bestselling These Violent Delights Because, Papa,” Dimitri finished, reaching out to let the crying Lev reach for his fingers, soothing him gently, “we are all your sons.” As fate draws a brother and a sister from each side together, the enmity between families and the power struggles between siblings could destroy it all...
