As priced, the MSI GF66 Katana is on the lower end of the pricing spectrum for a gaming laptop. Somehow, MSI positions in a way that it doesn’t directly compete with similarly priced laptops. Our review unit, the MSI Katana 12UD-436 comes with an Intel Core i7-12650H CPU, an RTX 3050Ti GPU, 16GB, and 512GB NVMe SSD storage. To refresh, our Katana GF66 test unit has an eight-core Intel Core i7-11800H CPU, a 6GB GeForce RTX 3060 GPU, 16GB of RAM, and a 1TB solid-state drive. That recipe is well-suited for 1080p gaming, as our benchmarks will show. The RTX 3060 GPU, as implemented here, is rated for 85 watts. In addition to the upgrades of the hardware, the display was also replaced by another panel. However, this appears to be more of a downgrade than upgrade, and thedisplay evaluation of the GF66 12UGS turns out significantly worse than that of the GF66 11UG. The Asus ROG Strix G15 may be pricier, but it’s better in several areas. It has more RGB LEDs and bolder design, a thinner body, and more versatile USB-C connectivity – although it still misses out on a webcam, fingerprint reader and card reader. I think I made it pretty clear I'm not a huge fan of the GF66's design, and I stand by that. It's a basic design and one that leaves me wanting a little more personality or color. The Core i7-11800H is a more recent 11 th Gen processor that’s got eight multi-threaded cores alongside speeds of 2.3GHz and 4.6GHz. It compares well to other Intel chips that are popular at the moment. If you want to play games using this machine expect around 1hr 45mins of longevity. That’s reasonable, but the Katana only lasted for just over two hours during a work test with reduced screen brightness and around three hours when watching a movie.The Intel Core i7-12700H belongs to the high-end CPUs from the new Alder Lake generation. The processor offers six performance and eight efficiency cores. In this way, the CPU is able to operate on 20 threads. With a TDP configurable up to 45 watts in PL1, the processor is suitable for larger laptops with a powerful cooling system.
