Maria’s Island – Victoria Hislop

Maria’s Island is a beautiful, engaging, and poignant book set on the Greek Island of Crete and the now uninhabited neighbouring island, Spinalonga. As a result there is a whole range of incredible native wildlife on the island, such as wombats and Tasmanian devils, and stunning natural landscapes like the sweeping bays, rugged cliffs, and sandy beaches. The absorbing story of the Cretan village of Plaka and the tiny, deserted island of Spinalonga – Greece’s former leprosy colony – is told to us by Maria Petrakis, one of the children in the original version of “The Island”. Please say animals. Because there’s lots of them! The literal wall of fossils down at the beach is fascinating to see, and there’s an information board there too so you can learn more about the geology of the place. Even more amazingly, all of Tasmania’s twelve endemic birds live on Maria Island, including the Forty-spotted pardalote, one of the rarest birds in Australia!

There is only one town on the island called Darlington. I actually wouldn’t even call it a town as there are no services; only the old convict probation station and historic buildings. Unfortunately, we never got up here as the mountain was fogged over the 2 days we were on the island. This is the view from the top of Bishop and Clerk. I can imagine the view from the top of this Maria Island walk on a clear day would be even better. Conclusion of Our Maria Island Travel Guide

Blending extraordinary landscapes with teeming wildlife, this island park also happens to have one of Tasmania’s most fascinating histories.Wear good shoes, and make sure you bring water with you. Alesha up the top of Bishop and Clerk Summit 5) Walk the Fossil Cliffs Circuit While not the highest mountain on the island (that accolade goes to Mount Maria), the climb up to Bishop and Clerk is by far the most rewarding and scenic hike you can do here. Maria Island or wukaluwikiwayna [2] in palawa kani is a mountainous island located in the Tasman Sea, off the east coast of Tasmania, Australia. The 115.5-square-kilometre (44.6sqmi) island is contained within the Maria Island National Park, which includes a marine area of 18.78 square kilometres (7.25sqmi) off the island's northwest coast. The island is about 20 kilometres (12mi) in length from north to south and, at its widest, is about 13 kilometres (8.1mi) west to east. At its closest point, Point Lesueur, the island lies approximately 4 kilometres (2.5mi) off the east coast of Tasmania. The storyline is heart-warming and heart-breaking at the same time, but it is so worth the read. You could feel all the raw emotions that Maria and those around her felt. The island’s toughest challenge on foot is its highest peak. Rising 711m above the sea, Mount Maria peers down onto McRaes Isthmus and along Tasmania’s east coast. From Darlington, the 16km walk will take about 8hr. Guided walks
