About this deal

Comments: A bit like what the annual Ardbeg Day releases do for Ardbeg fans, the Harmony Collection gives fans of Macallan the chance to try the spirit in a slightly different light or from a different perspective to the standard core-range expressions. To Whisky & Wisdom’s palate, the highlight of the Intense Arabica is the delicious interplay between bitter and sweet, and if you like both coffee and whisky, this will be right up your alley! These are variations on the same themes, but produced exclusively for the Travel Retail market. Finish: Medium in length, the finish is grippy and delivers a second wave of favour that really brings home the bacon…er…coffee. The lasting footprint is a perfectly balanced sensation of bitter-sweet, like dark chocolate, or a well-prepared coffee that has inherent sweetness to contrast the bean. From its founding, through the subsequent owners of the distillery in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and into the present century, the distillery has been recognised for its outstanding quality above all else. Today this remains the foundation for the worldwide fame of making their whiskies highly sought after and collectible.

To create the coffee-inspired second edition of The Harmony Collection, I sought out intense notes in The Macallan’s traditional sherry seasoned European oak casks that would offer the rich and satisfying elements of coffee, with the influence of sherry seasoned American oak casks adding sweeter and softer vanilla notes for a balanced and rounded experience. Among the coffee masters who shared their knowledge with Steven were Ethiopian coffee grower Kenean Asefa Dukamo, whose family works with the Arabica variety showcased by the whiskies;Scottish coffee roaster Lisa Lawson, a pioneer of speciality coffee in Scotland acclaimed for her roasting techniques; and award-winning American barista Andrea Allen, renowned for creating incredible coffee experiences. UK-based coffee artist Dhan Tamang crafted a range of coffee art, sharing his knowledge on the art of the perfect coffee serve and sensory perceptions, while leading coffee historian Professor Jonathan Morris, provided an insight into the roots of coffee and how it has become the global phenomenon it is today. Inspired by Intense Arabica, Macallan Harmony Collection exudes notes of espresso, dark chocolate and sweet oak. The intensely flavoured single malt invites you to immerse yourself in a sensory journey through flavour and aroma.

To clear up any confusion or misinterpretation, none of these whiskies utilise infusions or flavourings to achieve their connection with chocolate or coffee. Rather, they are inspired by those flavours, and The Harmony Collection relies simply on Macallan’s traditional use of mixing and matching sherry-seasoned casks (both American oak and European oak) from a range of different ages to achieve a final flavour profile that shares attributes with the product providing the inspiration (i.e. chocolate or coffee). As was with Intense Arabica, to create the whisky The Macallan’s Whisky Maker Steven Bremner consulted with Ethiopian coffee grower Kenean Asefa Dukamo, Scottish coffee roaster Lisa Lawson, and award-winning American barista Andrea Allen, so as to better understand coffee flavours.

Drawing inspiration from the Arabica coffee bean from Ethiopia, renowned as the birthplace of coffee, Bremner selected a combination of American and European oak casks to achieve the distinctive notes offered by the single malt. Smooth Arabica conveys the flavours of a gently spiced and soft americano which come through at an ABV of 40% and can be paired with coffee to provide a new way to savour The Macallan. Smooth Arabica follows up on the first Harmony Collection travel retail release, Fine Cacao. While the earlier edition expression explored the world of chocolate, the new drop shines the spotlight on coffee. The GTR limited edition, annual-release format is one which has strong appeal in travel retail, particularly when combined with the rich storytelling behind Smooth Arabica, drawing parallels with the popularity, heritage and craftsmanship of coffee and whisky making.”Drawing inspiration from the Arabica coffee bean from Ethiopia, renowned as the birthplace of coffee, Steven selected a harmonious combination of American and European oak casks to achieve the distinctive notes offered by the single malts. Inspired by Intense Arabica is reminiscent of a sweet yet strong espresso coffee and has a higher ABV of 44%, while Smooth Arabica conveys the flavors of a gently spiced and soft americano which come through at an ABV of 40%, and both can be paired with coffee to provide a new way to savor The Macallan. The Harmony Collection Intense Arabica is inspired by the Ethiopian Arabica bean. As part of the Sydney media launch for this release, attendees gathered at the Genovese Coffee House in Alexandria, where guests were treated to a wee presentation about the history and traditions of coffee and, in particular, the features of the Arabica bean and Ethiopia’s coffee heritage. Simon James of Genovese Coffee prepared up a specially-brewed pot of Arabica coffee (French Press, 1 part coffee to 14.5 parts water, for the coffee enthusiasts out there), and it didn’t take much imagination to join the dots between the delicious aromas wafting out of the steaming cup and the juicy dram of Intense Arabica sitting alongside. Simon James preparing a brew of Arabica coffee. Steven Bremner, Whisky Maker, The Macallan, said: "Exploring the world of coffee with our masters in the industry, who shared their knowledge, creativity, and love for their art, was both an education and an inspiration. There are many parallels between the approach to creating incomparable whisky and coffee. Each requires unique skills and craftsmanship to achieve depth and complexity of taste and both worlds aim to deliver an extraordinary consumption experience."
