When asked about taking the Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile book and adapting it for film, the directors agreed that they have both always loved the book. Musical numbers are a surprisingly difficult thing to get right, and I thought this movie managed to pull off some pretty spectacular ones. There is a great deal of variety to the visual presentation of each musical sequence, with characters and camera moving around with some fun choreography. During this interview, Mama’s Geeky spoke with the Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile directors about adapting the book & working with Shawn Mendes. The book is the second in the Lyle the Crocodile series, which follows the life of Lyle, a city-dwelling crocodile who lives in a Victorian brownstone with the Primms family. The vocabulary is fairly simple, though some things will need to be explained to today's children who will not understand the concept of a telephone operator. There are some more complex words, like "coax," "appreciatively," and "furious."See Shawn Mendes voice a singing reptile in ' Lyle, Lyle Crocodile' movie | ABC Audio Digital Syndication". Despite facing rejections from publishers, Waber eventually received encouragement from the Houghton Mifflin Company and was offered a contract for his book, Lorenzo. Nell Minow, writing for RogerEbert.com, was more positive in her review of the film, giving it a score of 3 out of 4 stars. She wrote: " Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile is a bit too long for a family movie, with some unnecessary complications toward the end, and it's not quite up to the Paddington level of movie adaptations of classic children's books. But it is a warm-hearted family film with great musical numbers that will make another generation of kids hopefully search the attic on the chance that they might find a singing crocodile." Brett Gelman as Alistair Grumps, the Primms' downstairs neighbor who has a grudge against Lyle. [11] Robert Abele was less than positive with his review writing for The Wrap: "Did Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile look good in storyboards or sound fun in creative meetings? Because it's a certifiable mess on its webbed hind feet, teetering uncomfortably as both fanciful family comedy and live-action/animated musical, whether trying to make dumpster diving look whimsical (it isn't) or the tunes sound like anything but positivity-anthem-generator readouts." Making the medium his own, too, his writing stands out as some of the best of its genre, really setting the benchmark for years to come. It was also his illustrations that would clearly stand out, making the stories entirely idiosyncratic to him and him alone. Publishing approximately thirty-three books in total during his career, he’d become one of the most prominent names in children’s literature. The stories themselves would be entertaining, with many of them becoming fixtures of households around the world. Waber found that he was always thinking about children’s books and even enjoyed the periods between writing books because it allowed for adventurous thought. He preferred to write while in motion, such as on trains or subways, as it helped to shake ideas loose in his head. While skilled at writing and illustrating, he preferred writing due to the freedom it offered. Waber’s passion for children’s books led him to create several beloved books, including “The House on East 88th Street,”“Ira Sleeps Over,” and “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile.”I also think as an actor, he seeks challenges. He started as more of a comedian and became this substantial, terrifying unit that we all know. And I think he wanted to show the world that he actually has these other flavors. But what he was excited to do, and we were excited to do, was not cheat anything. So it’s all his vocals. It’s all his dancing.” Serving as a staff sergeant between 1941 and 1945, he would later return to study at the Philadelphia College of Art, gaining his degree in 1951. Following his graduation, he would work as a commercial artist for Conde Nast Publications, marrying his wife Ethel Bernstein when he was twenty-eight. Moving to New York City, they would live together, having three children, and he would enjoy a long and illustrious career before passing away in 2013 on the 16th of May. Lyric Hurd as Trudy, Josh's friend from school who owns a beatboxing rattlesnake named Malfoy. [12] That is what drove them to make Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile a musical. “The truth about great musicals is you can only express yourself through song when all else fails. So for us, that was the biggest thing of the adaptation — was turning into a musical.” Kroll, Justin (February 10, 2022). There's also a sequence in which a montage is shown made up of scenes from earlier in the movie, and I thought it was hilariously clumsy in how it was put together. One day, Lyle is thrown into the zoo by Mr. Grumps, but he is eventually freed by his old performing partner, Mr. Valenti, whose intent is for him and Lyle to go to Australia and become entertainers again as they had been in the past. However, this idea saddened Lyle, who preferred to go home to the Primm family.
