What’s a brain bend, you ask? It’s what Catriona Ward’s books do to my head. My brain has to work so hard while I read them that when I’m finished, my mind feels bent. In host to start service automatically, you have to make systemd user level service. Create file like that, if you use pulseaudio:

Looking Glass Sound by Catriona Ward | Waterstones

A frightening nesting doll of a novel about ghosts and monsters, trauma and loss, and the specific aching intensity of teenage friendships. Perhaps most of all, it's a book about stories--and their ability to save or destroy the teller. You'll stay up all night wandering the labyrinth Ward has deftly constructed." I have liked Catriona Wards previous books that I have read but she has brought her writing and storytelling to a new level here. I will be very surprised, even at this early stage if this doesnt end up being my favourite read of 2023. As he heads off to college, Wilder finds he can only manage his anxiety over the trauma he experienced by obsessively writing about the Dagger Man and the events of those key summers, and he st Unbelievably good.... so clever, so haunting and melancholic. It's so beautiful, so dark, and so vivid."

But when Pearl is introduced, things get confusing. Pearl is clearly connected to Harper and Wilder, but it takes a while before the whys and hows are explained. The story contains no less than five different books: The Dagger Man of Whistler Bay (written by Wilder), The Sound and the Dagger (written by Sky), Skye (Wilder’s second book), the “fictional” Pearl (written by Skye), and finally, Looking Glass Sound (written by Pearl). The characters take on various personas and seem to appear in each other’s stories, and keeping them straight isn’t easy—Wilder/Wiley, Harper/Helen, Nat/Nate, Sky/Skye/Skander—some are real and some aren’t. To confuse things even more, another character named Grace makes an appearance late in the story, and again, she’s connected to the others in some interesting ways. So, there are two presenting mysteries, Dagger Man and the missing women. And a bit of magic in the air, whether it is a dark siren luring some to a watery grave, mysterious noises and notes, or teens fooling around with witchy spells. Are the kids just being imaginative, or is there something truly spectral going on? We have to list it right away,’ Dad says. ‘Sell while the summer’s still fine. I know that.’ We all know that. The envelopes with red on them come through the door all the time.

Looking Glass Sound - Catriona Ward - Mijnsite Review: Looking Glass Sound - Catriona Ward - Mijnsite

I was reminded of The Language of Dying by Sarah Pinborough. Looking Glass Sound has that same delicate exploration of humanity and the journey we all take. I’ll no doubt be accused of being a raging sentimentalist * but it’s quite beautiful really. This is one of those novels that you know is going to stay with you. It’s the sort of thing that when I finished I’m driven by the urge to go and find someone else who has also read it so we can spend hours discussing it. Sorry,’ I hear her say to the fisherman, as if she’s offending him somehow. The man nods gently. The world is full of sorrow, his silence seems to say. Maybe they were lovers, I think, excited. Maybe he left her. The red ball of the morning sun is burning off the last sea mist. I go down the path, gravel skittering from my sandalled feet, towel slung over my shoulder.Ah no-one is more disappointed than me, that in a tidal wave of praise, I cannot get fully on board..

Looking Glass Sound - Macmillan

Not every horror story has a monster at the end of it. At least, not one that’s easily identifiable. Catriona Ward’s latest novel, Looking Glass Sound, is, in part, the story of a serial murder, but its dark and unsettling feel has more to do with the everyday characters at its center—and the various betrayals they’re capable of—than it does a killer who stalks innocent women at night. And while her book’s picturesque seaside setting masks more than its fair share of dark secrets, its protagonists’ all carried varying degrees of darkness within themselves long before they set foot on its shores. But that’s what makes psychological horror so frightening, isn’t it— the fact that, if you squint, it’s not that different from the real life you’re living right now? I have a feeling that some tutorials for Scream on Looking Glass may be out of date. Is there anything newer out there? (I couldn’t find anything with Scream 3.6 for instance) About the book:In a lonely cottage overlooking the windswept Maine coast, Wilder Harlow begins the last book he will ever write. It is the story of his childhood summer companions and the killer that stalked the small New England town. Of the body they found, and the horror of that discovery echoing down the decades. And of Sky, Wilder’s one-time best friend, who stole his unfinished memoir and turned it into a lurid bestselling novel, Looking Glass Sound. But as Wilder writes, the lines between memory and fiction blur. He fears he’s losing his grip on reality when he finds notes hidden around the cottage written in Sky’s signature green ink.

Read Looking Glass Sound by Catriona Ward

I'll start off by saying that I adored The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward. BUT the first read was a 3.5 star rating for me. It wasn't until the reread that I fully understand the intricacies of the story. So, perhaps I am similarly not realizing the depth of this particular novel because I've only read it the one time. But I struggle to believe that's true. There are things I enjoyed. But the things I didn't can't be overshadowed or explained away. Finally, we are introduced to Pearl, the daughter of a woman named Rebecca who supposedly drowned a decade earlier in the bay. Pearl is also a writer and is tangled up with Wilder, Harper and Nat, although to explain how would be a spoiler.
