Lagavulin 16 on the other hand, painted a richer, deeper portrait. A potent blend of profound smoky sweetness was complemented by sea-salty hints that whispered tales of Islay’s rugged coastline. Each sip had unfurling complex layers of ripe fruits, toasted nuts, and a distinguished peat smoke that culminated in a long, spicy finish. Lagavulin 27 yo 1991/2018 (51.8%, OB ‘Casks of Distinction’, cask #0016, sherry puncheon, 432 bottles) - by Angus - 180420

Lagavulin seems to be involved in some sort of reverse age-statement arms race (with who?). The classic 16 year Lagavulin was on everyone’s lips in, oh, 2010, and then a cask-strength 12 year-old dropped (for like a Benjamin) in 2017. Now, an 8 year at a somewhat elevated 48% ABV. What’s next? A 3-year? Records the default button state of the corresponding category & the status of CCPA. It works only in coordination with the primary cookie. The alcohol by volume (ABV) in a whisky can have a significant effect on its overall character. The Lagavulin 8 stands a touch stronger at 48% ABV, while the Lagavulin 16 is bottled at 43%. What does this mean for your sipping experience? Lagavulin 'Jazz Festival 2017' (57.6%, OB, refill American oak hogsheads and refill European oak butts, 6000 bottles) - by Angus - 020219 On the positive side, its flavour profile is surprisingly versatile for a peaty whisky. Its sweet notes and hints of fruit and malt can make it appealing to a wide range of whisky lovers. On the downside, the Lagavulin 8 can be a bit harsh on the nose for the uninitiated. Its smoke can come across as intense, even overwhelming. And visually, its pale colour may not seem as inviting as the honeyed hues of other whiskies.

Lagavulin 8 Years is a fruity, vanilla laden and slightly spirity rendition of Lagavulin that’s fun to drink even if it’s not wildly complex. It’s a whisky that brings a unique character to the table and fully displays a previously unseen side of the Lagavulin distillery – In the mass market anyways. In the indie world, young Lagavulins have been around for a while, but none have been able to carry the Lagavulin name for legal reasons.

Lagavulin 8 (Scotch Single Malt, 48% abv) Wrapping it up, I’ve compiled a scoring table for a head-to-head comparison.These numbers reflect my personal experiences and preferences, aiming to give you an honest perspective.

Lagavulin 8 Year Old Details

Lagavulin 1997/2012 'Islay Jazz Festival' (54.5%, OB, refill sherry butt, cask #1894, 624 bottles) - 250912 Lagavulin 30 yo 1991/2022 (44.3%, OB, Cask of Distinction, for Hong Kong Whisky Fellows, House Welley Whisky Bar, Christoph Kirsch, Sebastian Jaeger and Boris Borissov, 1st Fill PX/Oloroso seasoned European oak butt, cask #5403, 318 bottles) - 051222 Take colour, for instance. Lagavulin 16’s deeper, amber hue is just more inviting to me. There’s a sense of depth, of a story well-told. Don’t get me wrong, the pale charm of Lagavulin 8 has its appeal, but it didn’t ignite the same anticipation. Lagavulin 15 yo 'Islay Jazz Festival 2023' (53.9%, OB, Distillery Exclusive, oloroso sherry butt finish, 3,000 bottles) - 021023

Lagavulin 'Jazz Festival 2018' (58.5%, OB, 1st fill American oak barrels, refill American oak hogsheads & European oak puncheons) - by Angus - 020219

Lagavulin 8, markanın 2016’da kuruluşunun 200. yılını kutlama amacıyla çıkardığı bir ekspresyon. Bu ekspresyon aynı zamanda, 1880’lerde Lagavulin damıtımevini ziyaret eden ve sonrasında markanın 8 yıllık ekspresyonlarına hayranlığını dile getiren ünlü viski tarihçisi Alfred Barnard’a da adanmış bir viski. Öyle ki, şişenin üzerinde Barnard’ın viski hakkındaki yorumlarına yer verilmiş. Lagavulin 11 yo 'Offerman Edition' (46%, OB, charred oak, 3rd Edition, 2022) - 200323 - by Angus - 210123 Genel Yorum : Lagavulin 8’i değerlendirmek için markanın standart ekspresyonu 16 ile kıyaslamak en mantıklısı. 16’ya göre en önemli fark 8’i çok daha vahşi ve ne yazık ki dengesiz bir viski olması. Burunda genç karakterine rağmen keyifli bulsam da damakta biraz dengesiz ve gövdesi düşük bir ekspresyon. Kör bir tadımda 8 yıldan daha genç bir viski olduğunu söyleyebilirdim. Bu yazı ilginizi çektiyse;

This fairly young but good dram is strong and smoky, with lots of sweet spots and peppery character as well. It is simple but good. If we decide not to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms, such decision shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision.Each sip unfurls layers of complex flavours; ripe fruits and toasted nuts. And of course, that distinguished peat smoke, ending in a long, spicy finish. It’s the romance of a late-night campfire on a remote beach, the comfort of an old leather armchair, and the thrill of a good mystery novel—all bottled up. Smell: Smoke, of course, but more subtle than I remember. Ashtrays. Sea salt. White pepper. Touch of brine. Some citrus, especially lemon. Subtle honey. Vanilla. Fresh oak. Malt. Hay. Touch of liquorice. Lagavulin 26 yo 1991/2017 (51.7%, OB, Casks of Distinction, Hong Kong, butt, cask #3479, 492 bottles) - 201219 Nose: Tons of kippery peat mixed with a fresh grainy sweetness, like multigrain bread toasted over an industrial fire and slathered in clover honey. Notes of briny salt overlay a fundamental freshness, aromas of ripe pear and soft dried apricot. There’s also a bit of hay-like character, but very lively and fresh-cut. Peat skews towards the maritime, but the smoke is bold too. Drawing comparisons to other Islay whiskies, the 8 year old’s flavour profile reminds me of the Caol Ila 12 but lighter and somewhat feistier. The Lagavulin 8 seems more ambitious like it’s got a point to prove. And it does so with aplomb.
