About this deal

Medical Microbiology explores microbes and microbial activities, including their effects on health. For more detailed information on immunology careers, please refer to our careers section. The immune system The book covers a wide range of topics, from the structure and function of the immune system to the latest immunotherapy treatments. In addition, the authors provide actionable takeaways that can help readers optimize their own immune health.

Adaptive immunity is the second line of defence which involves building up memory of encountered infections so can mount an enhanced response specific to the pathogen or foreign substance. Adaptive immunity involves antibodies, which generally target foreign pathogens roaming free in the bloodstream. Also involved are T cells, which are directed especially towards pathogens that have colonised cells and can directly kill infected cells or help control the antibody response. Immune dysfunction and clinical immunologyThe authors provide actionable takeaways that can help readers optimize their own immune health, including getting plenty of sleep, exercising regularly, and eating a healthy diet. Immunology is a complex and ever-changing field, which can make it difficult to keep up with the latest research. However, “Immunology: A Short Course” by Eli Benjamini and Stephen P. Ferreri provides a clear and concise overview of the immune system, making it an essential read for anyone looking to stay up-to-date on the latest developments.

Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple, 6th Edition by Mark Gladwin, Bill Trattler, and C. Scott Mahan In a world haunted by microbes and their constant changes, the authors of Medical Microbiology offer an inspiring read. Now in a thoroughly updated new edition, Kuby Immunology remains the only undergraduate introduction to immunology written by teachers of the course. In the Kuby tradition, authors Jenni Punt, Sharon Stranford, Patricia Jones, and Judy Owen present the most current topics in an experimental context, conveying the excitement of scientific discovery, and highlight important advances, but do so with the focus on the big picture of the study of immune response, enhanced by unsurpassed pedagogical support for the first-time learner.

Patricia Jones - the Dr. Nancy Chang Professor in the Department of Biology in the School of Humanities and Sciences. She received her Ph. D. in Biology/Immunology from Johns Hopskins Unviersity in 1974 and joined Stanford's Faculty in 1978. Among various administrative appointments, she currently serves as the Vice Provost for Faculty Development and Diversity (since 2000). Transplants involve transferring cells, tissues or organs from a donor to a recipient. The most formidable barrier to transplants is the immune system’s recognition of the transplanted organs as foreign. Understanding the mechanisms and clinical features of rejection is important in determining a diagnosis, advising treatment and is critical for developing new strategies and drugs to manage transplants and limit the risk of rejection. The book provides a clear and concise overview of the immune system, making it an essential read for anyone looking to stay up-to-date on the latest developments. The immune system is a highly regulated and balanced system and when the balance is disturbed, disease can result. Research in this area involves studying disease that is caused by immune system dysfunction. Much of this work has significance in the development of new therapies and treatments that can manage or cure the condition by altering the way the immune system is working or, in the case of vaccines, priming the immune system and boosting the immune reaction to specific pathogens. Jenni Punt - has been a Professor of Biology at Haverford College since 1996. A graduate of Bryn Mawr College, who majored in Biology at Haverford College, she attended a combined VMD/PhD (immunology) program at the University of Pennsylvania before doing her post-doctoral fellowship with Dr. Alfred Singer at the National Institutes of Health. She has received numerous teaching awards at Haverford College, as well as the American Association of Immunologist Distinguished Service Award for teaching and helping to develop their Introductory Course Curriculum. Sharon Stranford - received her PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from Hahnemann University (now Drexel) in Philadelphia, where she studied autoimmunity with Elizabeth Blankenhorn. After graduating, she spent 3 years as a postdoctoral fellow at Oxford University in England, exploring transplantation immunology, followed by 3 years at the University of California, San Francisco, working on HIV/AIDS with Dr. Jay Levy. In 2001 she was hired as a Clare Booth Luce Assistant Professor at Mount Holyoke College, a small liberal arts college for women in South Hadley, MA, where she is currently an Associate Professor serving the Department of Biological Sciences and the Program in Biochemistry. Patricia Jones - the Dr. Nancy Chang Professor in the Department of Biology in the School of Humanities and Sciences. She received her Ph. Judith Owen - has served on the faculty of Haverford College, Pennsylvania since 1981, where she is the first holder of the Elizabeth Ufford Green Chair of Natural Sciences. Judith earned B.A. and M.A. (Hons) degrees from Cambridge University, England and pursued her PhD at the University of Pennsylvania with the late Dr. Norman Klinman followed by postdoctoral studies at the Wistar Institute with Dr. Peter Doherty. Judith has served on the Education Committee of the American Association of Immunologists, (AAI) and as Chair of the AAI Membership Committee.
