About this deal

My eldest daughter is 41 so it probably seems a little bit strange that dad's had another baby before they've had theirs but they're all very happy. Love, Pain & Money retraces the inspirational journey, from the very shaky beginnings of his phone empire to owning yachts, private planes, a fleet of top flight cars, a Jacobean mansion in the Midlands and London's most expensive home (featured in a Channel 4 documentary). It's a fascinating insight into the drive, ambition, focus and vision required to become a billionaire. I've got five children so I didn't really need another child to bring into the world. But I'm absolutely delighted for Modesta so because I'm delighted for Modesta, I'm delighted for me. It's wonderful news and I'm sure I'll really enjoy it.

Love, Pain and Money by John Caudwell | Waterstones

Ward, Victoria (13 December 2015). "Phones4U billionaire John Caudwell says 11 family members now diagnosed with Lyme disease". The Daily Telegraph . Retrieved 17 May 2019. Caudwell also warned he would not continue to support the party should it continue to be hit by allegations of sleaze. “Whoever can rule this country properly, in my view, I will vote for,” he said. “I’m not a dyed-in-the-wool Conservative that will stay Conservative. I will vote for anybody that I believe has got the right set of principles to keep Britain great. The Conservative party can’t take my support for granted.” Caudwell, northern accent and sense of humor intact, is happy to recount his humble beginnings in the caravan he called home at the time. “It was probably 14-foot long by about 6-foot wide. It was very, very small to live in, but of course,” he adds, “perfectly do-able.” In the days after that first sighting, John kept using the payphone but realised mobile was the future. So he asked his assistant to find one - which took her three days in that era before ubiquitous phone shops. As a signatory to the Giving Pledge, John is committed to giving at least 70 percent of his wealth to charitable causes during and after his lifetime. By signing up to the Pledge, John sits alongside Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and over 200 of the world’s wealthiest individuals who are using their personal wealth to solve humanitarian problems.Caudwell said he had held talks with the chancellor about his own plans for helping Britain through the pandemic, including investing in future infrastructure, green industry and apprenticeships. Asked how his suggestions have been received by other tycoons, he laughs - “I’m a pariah!” - and says he hasn’t persuaded any other billionaires yet. John said: “It would be wrong to say that there weren't moments when I'd look at what I'd achieved - at the high street name, the fact our advertising was world-beating and everybody talked about it, and felt a sense of pride. Caudwell was married to Kate McFarlane for 25 years. The couple divorced in 2001, and they had three children. [7] [28] He then had a brief relationship [29] with violinist Jane Burgess, with whom he had a daughter. [7] [30] He was then in a long-term relationship with former model Claire Johnson for 15 years, with whom he has a son. [7] [30] [31] They separated in 2014. [28] John David Caudwell (born 7 October 1952) is a British billionaire businessman who founded the now defunct mobile phone retailer Phones 4u. He also invests in fashion, real estate and other industries, and chairs Caudwell Children, a children's charity, [1] and Caudwell LymeCo, promoting chronic Lyme disease beliefs in the UK. [2] [3]

I had never heard those words, ‘My mate fancies you,’ which every other bloke I knew seemed pretty familiar with. But Kate from the estate was definitely– very definitely – smiling at me. I took a couple of sips of my beer as my mind went into overdrive trying to work out what was going on. She was moving closer to where I was standing, laughing with her mates and every few minutes throwing her dazzling smile in my direction. She was less than a couple of feet away from me. I had to say something before it was too late. I could barely take it all in. Turned out we were moving into a two-bedroom upstairs council flat on the huge, sprawling Bentilee estate that was built to house the coal and factory workers of Stoke.

I’ve not been extremely complimentary about the Conservative party these last two years. But I still believe that it’s the best party to run this country, and I’d be terrified of the Lib Dems getting in and even more terrified of Labour.”

From that London mansion the size of Westminster Cathedral - which includes a river flowing under glass and a 120-capacity ballroom and where all guests have to remove their shoes to avoid marking the white carpets - John keeps an eye on his “ultra high net worth” development nearby. At the time, John, who grew up in Shelton, said: "“The police approached us about taking part in Crimewatch, because it could potentially be very useful in stimulating information. I always move on,” he said. “That’s right from the day I stopped getting involved in cars. Once, I knew every light unit on every car and every badge. I could have told you what any car was from 100 metres. Now I couldn't tell you the difference between a Vauxhall and a BMW. I know nothing. Zero.

I’m not sure he can survive this, and I’m not even sure he should survive it. If he cleaned his act up and made it clear to MPs that they cannot take money from other sources, and started trying to get the government on a very ethical, whiter-than-white basis, I guess I would still support him. But I suppose the question you’ve really got to answer is, is it in his character to do so?” Born in a terraced house in Stoke-on-Trent, Caudwell went from bullied child to insecure trainee engineer at a local Michelin plant to self-made billionaire, befriending Sir Elton John, Eva Longoria, Hugh Grant and Robbie Williams, who have all taken part in his charity balls to raise money for Caudwell Children. a b c Dawkins, David (10 October 2019). John Caudwell, 68, from Staffordshire, said he needed a number of operations after he broke 11 bones in the freak accident. But he became too reliant on Motorola and, when it decided to take distribution in house, he was left high and dry. And no small amount of his intellectual energy nowadays is firmly directed at “Brussels bully boys” and “lily-livered” U.K. politicians. “I don't understand how intelligent people, successful people, can’t see the benefits of being out of Europe,” he says, “I think MPs are disgusting. Really disgusting. This shilly-shallying, I don’t understand [it]. Why don’t they understand that saying we’re going to have a no deal is the best way to get a good deal? You can already see the change in attitude from the EU. They’re trembling.” a b Ruz, Camila (21 October 2015). "The controversy over the chronic form of Lyme disease". BBC News .
