She looked, quite frankly, astonished. “Oh,” she said. Then seemed to struggle for words. “Of course, if that’s what you want, husband-“

But I have to say that he didn't remind me of Jarvis as he ahd my firend Ira! *wink* He was too bewildred - Jarvis would never do these things! LOL Seeing Mason and Linette, the MCs from the previous book, was lovely. I enjoyed their story immensely and seeing its continuation with their adorable children was an unexpected pleasure. You’re not going straight to Vawdrey Keep, then?” asked Mason with a heavy frown. “Much work awaits you there too, now you’ve inherited it.” And they became Ambrose’s when he married you,” cut in Orla smugly. “You have nothing now. Not a penny to your name.” She paused, considering a moment, then shook her head. “Please stay safe,” she urged. “You have made your fortune now and earned your new title. Can you not look to retire from such dangerous service to the crown?”The play was definitely the thing here. I loved how that dumb bulb cheater king Wymer tried to figure out the implications of the play while his clever queen Armenal figured it out straight away. Oswald lost his head since the beginning: he became jealous-crazy! He manipulated poor Fenella until she didn't understand anything at all!!! He gazed past the gown to focus on her and the blue gown she wore. “Very lovely,” he said. “Take off that gown,” he said testily. “I don’t want to see you wearing it again.” I loved most of His Forsaken Bride, but the end didn't work for me. I'm very excited to read the next book though, and the books from the Brides of Karadok series. Alice Coldbreath is becoming one of my favorite authors.

Books like Wed By Proxy(Brides of Karadok) by Alice Coldbreath

Her eyes were bright with concern. He had been quite wrong about their color, he noticed distractedly. Up close you could see they were more of a deep amber color than brown. Her mouth, he chose not to dwell on for it was wide and pink, the bottom lip disturbingly plump. Oswald’s nostrils flared as he imagined her sat on his lap clad in nothing but a transparent shift. He stood up jerkily from the table. “I find I am tired. No,” he said as she came to her feet. “You do not have to rush to join me.” Archie's birth was his proudest moment,” agreed Oswald. The smile dropped off his face. “You made him very happy, Mason,” he said quietly. “I hope you know that.”This book does a great job setting up for two of the later books in the series, "An Ill-Made Match" and "Wed by Proxy". Plus, Roland was a twit in "Her Baseborn Bridegroom", but was much more likable in this book, which is great considering that he's the hero in "An Ill-Made Match".

Second read: 4.5 stars. I don’t know what I was thinking the first time around, but I definitely appreciated this book more the second time. I absolutely LOVE the hero, he’s fantastic. All his scheming and plotting made him all the more delicious. Also, the sex scenes were 🔥🔥🔥. Lonely?” repeated Oswald blankly. “Linnet I'm surrounded at any time by the King's court, some hundred or so people, not counting servants!” He wanted you just as happy,” said Mason surprising him. “It's true,” said his brother gruffly. “He spoke to Linnet of it at the end.”

Oswald smiled. “Do you imagine you were discreet in that thought, Linnet?” he asked making her laugh. Fenella and Oswald grew up together as neighbors, and he was her first love. She wrote him poems, made detailed tapestries she gifted to him, and then he disappeared after a horrific battle when he was only 21. Fenella comes to him for help with her marriage/divorce issues, Oswald decides he will keep her. Feeling pressure from predicted actions of the King, Oswald uses the opportunity with Fen to save himself from a situation he has no desire to find himself in. With every intention of carrying on with his life as it has been, he soon realizes that he cannot imagine a day, much less a night, without Fen at his side. What was once a well-organized life becomes filled with inopportune thoughts of her when he should be giving everything to the intrigues that surround court life. There is a dash of mysticism that doesn't really add much to the story except in suggesting that Oswald's affections for Fen were already engaged at 19. They settle into staid matrimony and small, little, everyday things happens to prod along the story as they live at court (a very urban H this), and this married-couple-routine is good (they get to know each other) and bad (as in so drawn out) in equal measures. Our country girl h learns the ways of the court, and makes new friends and connections. The royal couple, by the way, has some pretty interesting dynamics.

My biggest complaint - Fen was too passive. Everything happened to Fen, the divorce, the play, the painting, the gossips. There wasn’t much Fen actually did out of her own accordance. To be honest I didn’t understand, why? Why did she not talk to Oswald about the play? I really didn’t feel like it was a big enough plot point to create such an entire mess over. It could have easily been stopped if she had just shut it down in the beginning.

N-no,” she sobbed. Her whole body was trembling, she was strung so taut. Being inside her was almost unbearable. Her body’s embrace was so hot, and tight he felt like he might lose his mind if she did not give him full reign over it. Linnet looked skeptical, but was distracted by Archie letting out a yell at being ignored for so long. You might be surprised,” she answered with a soft smile. “He would have been pleased to see you making your own stamp on the place.”
