About this deal

So although you can skip SLSA I recommend never, ever skipping the polysorbate 80 when making bath bombs. Finally, never, ever skip the emulsifier, Polysorbate 80. If you do, you will end up with a big mess on your bather and the tub. More on that in the science section below. Once we add water, citric acid [C6H8O7] and sodium bicarbonate [NaHCO3] (baking soda) react to form sodium citrate [Na3C6H5O7], water, and carbon dioxide [CO2] gas. The chemical reaction in bath bombs is between citric acid and baking soda (a base). When the acid and base react with each other, they release CO2 (carbon dioxide) gas. Which is what forms the fizzy bubbles in the water. The best part about this bath bomb project is that it feels like a real potions class! With all the little cauldrons and the many bowls of different coloured potions brewing, it makes for a fantastically real feeling class from Hogwarts. We just need Snape pacing around us, peering down his nose and it would be perfect.

For now, we continue to include Harry Potter as an inspiration in many of our educational activities. TIPS FOR MAKING BATH BOMBS WITH KIDS Once the ingredients are mixed, they should form a ball in your hand and feel like wet sand. Once you have this texture, fill each egg mold to the top. Make sure to press down firmly. They are cunning, ambitious and proud. Slytherin house has also produced more Dark Wizards than any other house. That doesn’t mean all Slytherin’s are evil, it simply means their drive and ambition needs a little extra guidance to ensure it is always tempered with kindness and empathy. It is only when that empathy is lost that the evil emerges. A few weeks ago we created a whole Harry Potter school plan full of cool educational ideas. Turns out that wasn’t enough for my kids, we needed more magical Hogwarts inspired lessons! So this week we dabbled in a bit of potions (chemistry) and created bath bombs in cauldrons. These are not just any bath bombs though, these are house reveal bath bombs! It was a fun twist that the kids loved in this project. Now the best part, adding the feathers so your Golden Snitch can take flight! Trim the hard part of the feather stem to about 1/8 inch. Then very gently slip into the side of the bath bomb. Repeat on the other side.

Lumos Face and body shimmer drops We prefer to use biodegradeable glitter whenever possible, but there are sadly a limited number of options available. Below I have linked to cosmetic glitter in the perfect wine and gold colours, plus some biodegradeable glitter which may not be as perfectly coloured but is better for our environment. Which you chose to use in making your bath bombs is completely up to you. You can also chose to leave out glitter entirely and it will not affect the recipe. In a small bowl add coconut oil, approximately 10 drops of the essential oils of your choice, and polysorbate 80. Blend well. Then add to the large bowl. Later on, Harry asks the Sorting Hat again, and the Hat still insists Harry would have done well in Slytherin.

For each cauldron, you will add the darker color of the Hogwarts House first and fill a bit less than halfway, pressing down gently. The lighter color will be added next, again pressing down gently until just under the lip of the cauldron. The white mixture will be on top and pressed down until flush with the top of the cauldron. It’s kind of funny how the ideas build on themselves around here. I’ve been a HUGE fan of Harry Potter ever since I read Sorcerer’s Stone in 1999. About 5 years ago I started reading aloud the book to my kids. If I remember correctly, I got about 3 chapters in before my oldest, who was 7 at the time, took the book from me and devoured the whole thing in 3 days. He then went on to read the entire series three times over.Add coconut oil. Depending on where you live you may want to get fractionated coconut oil, or warm your coconut oil so it isn’t solid. You want it liquid so it mixes well. I know most of the year our coconut oil is solid.
