About this deal

I started following the GAPS diet intro on January 1st of this year. The first two weeks were brutal. I had been toxic for so long that I was used to feeling lousy, but the die-off this diet produced was intense. In the book, she stresses the importance of managing die-off; but, because I was so toxic, there was really little I could do. The diet alone, even without the introduction of probiotics, sauerkraut, and kefir was enough to produce rapid die-off. It claims that once these foreign substances enter your blood, they can affect your brain’s function and development, causing “brain fog” and conditions like autism. The researchers suggest that gut imbalances could contribute to schizophrenia and other complex behavioral conditions. This book proposes that nearly every psychological issue under the sun, including autism, ADHD, depression, and schizophrenia, are caused by an imbalance of bacteria in the gut. Singh V et al. Immunodiagnosis and immunotherapy in autistic children. Ann NY Acad Sci 540:602-604, 1988.

Ketones (acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate and acetone) are water- soluble substances produced in the body when it uses fats for making energy. In a normal healthy state our bodies can use both glucose and fats, depending on the composition of our meals, activity level and other factors. Having ketones in the blood is normal, because fat is the preferred source of energy for most organs and tissues in the human body. Every time your body burns its own fat for energy, ketones are produced, and they can also be used for energy production. It’s a complex condition thought to result from a combination of genetic and environmental factors ( 20). During the introduction phase, the diet requires you to introduce foods slowly, starting with small amounts and building up gradually.

Gut and Psychology Syndrome (GAPS)

The diet recommends that you move from one stage to the next once you are tolerating the foods you have introduced. You are considered to be tolerating a food when you have a normal bowel movement. Other studies have found that particular strains of probiotics can improve the severity of autism symptoms ( 9, 10, 11).

GAPS stands for Gut and Psychology Syndrome. It’s a term that Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, who also designed the GAPS diet, invented. The diet is most often used for children, especially those who have a health condition that mainstream medicine may not fully understand yet, such as autism. The mainstream medical profession is trained to fear ketones because of a very dangerous situation, which can happen in diabetic people, called ketoacidosis. When the body starts using mostly fat for producing energy it goes into a state of physiological ketosis, which is perfectly normal and healthy and has nothing to do with diabetic ketoacidosis.

There are people who need to eat more plants to feel well. And even people, who thrive on mostly animal foods, have periods when their bodies ask for more plant matter. The chapter One Man’s Meat is Another Man’s Poison in the second GAPS book (Gut And Physiology MOST SUPPLEMENTS ARE HARSH TO THE INTESTINES. They are synthetic, and toxic. Even natural vitamins and supplements provide more nutrition than necessary which can actually feed the bad pathogens in the gut. The Full GAPS Diet needs to be followed for about two years. Some people with milder conditions can start introducing non-allowed foods in about a year; others must adhere to the diet strictly for many years, and some for the rest of their lives. When your health problems are gone and you have been well for six months at least, you may be able to consider coming off the GAPS Diet. At that stage please look at the relevant chapter in the GAPS books. For some people the Full GAPS Diet has to become a permanent lifestyle. These methods are soaking, sprouting and fermentation. Please, read the second GAPS book (Gut And Physiology Syndrome) to understand this issue fully and to learn how to prepare seeds properly. These techniques are also described in detail in The Complete Cooking Techniques for the GAPS Diet by Monica Corrado, which I warmly recommend. It’s recommended that you choose a probiotic containing strains from a range of bacteria, including Lactobacilli, Bifidobacteria, and Bacillus subtilis varieties.Singh V at al.
