Negatives aside, Ghost Stories is an excellent game. Each player has enough agency on their own turn that I don't think it suffered too much from one player dominating the game, as can happen with some co-ops, though the potential might be there if one player is noticeably more vocal than the others. This Last Bastion review was made after playing the game eight times. We were sent a copy of this game by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. You change races several times during a game because after you’ve used up all your units your race goes into decline and you play as another one! Changing races means you’ve got new abilities to try out which keeps the game interesting and fun. This fantasy tower defense theme just isn’t as interesting to me as the ghost-fighting village defense theme in Ghost Stories. Fluxx games always start off the same. You can draw 1 card and play 1 card. Simple enough to start with. But as you go along, the number of cards you can draw, the number of cards you can play, and even how you win changes with the draw of a card!

It’s got 15 races like Spiderines and Vampires that are perfect for Halloween! Along with the races there are special powers that get randomly assigned to the races during each game. So you can have combinations like Vanishing Vampires and Mystic Mummies. This game has a ton of versatility and replay-ability, with four difficulty levels, unique abilities for each player, and a variety of village setups.

This game comes from the creators of Eldritch Horror and Arkham Horror, so you can expect a similar experience. It is recommended for veteran gamers, but can also be played by beginners. Moreover, you need to have a good strategy, because the game itself is designed to make winning very challenging. One thing that could turn people away from Ghost Stories initially is how difficult it is. Even on the “easiest” level, it is very possible to lose five out of six games. With new ghosts appearing each turn, it can be overwhelming to beat them and can get a bit frustrating. That being said, when you do get those rare wins, it just….feels…GREAT!

For people who love fantasy and classic RPGs, the Legends of Andor creates a vibrant cooperative game where 2-4 heroes work together to save the land. The game includes five different scenarios, called “legends,” and each character can play as a male or female hero. Last Bastion was designed by Antoine Bauza ( Ghost Stories, Hanabi) and is published by Repos Production. At the start of the game, all characters are on friendly terms with each other but are very much off doing their own thing.

For cooperative gaming, each team has one simple objective, and that is to catch all the agents that belong to them before the other team gets ahold of theirs. Each team has a spymaster who is the only person to know the identities of the agents. Wu Feng is always a unique ghost with different victory conditions. You can bet that by the time he shows up, your resources will be taxed, and he’ll be quite a challenge. In this way, the game can be divided into two general phases. First, your players must survive by dealing with trouble. Second, you must go on the offensive and aggressively take out Wu Feng before the players are overwhelmed. We are just beginning to understand the benefits of play, for both children and adults. We have learned that play is an essential aspect of reducing stress, developing creativity, and building relationships.
