About this deal

With the custom firmware, non-Freesat channels can be added to the Freesat EPG. Unfortunately no EPG programme information is available for non-Freesat channels.

Overall, it's a classy looking machine that's reassuringly well built. Inside is a 320GB hard disk that can store about 80 hours of HD programming or 200 hours of standard-definition (or somewhere in between for a mixture of the two formats). You do however misunderstand slightly, it doesn't replace the software you have, rather adds to it allowing some standard Linux and other enthusiast devoloped apps to the box. This allows you to for instance view the recordings remotely on smart TV's tablets etc (technically you can a add a DLNA server). Also copy recording files directly to a PC for viewing anywhere.

Select a product first.

Under Setup, you can configure the installation settings, perform a Freesat Tune, Manual Tune, update software and restore the receiver to its Factory settings. I'm not sure where to go next. Can anyone help? Is this possible, and if so, what am I doing wrong? Select Yes and press the OK button to restore all setting to factory default. To return to the previous menu, select No and press the OK.

Select All or the value in the transponder list and press the OK button. If the required value is not available, select User Define and enter the transponder value directly. On the plus side, I have the ability to properly troubleshoot future failures so not a bad outcome, as long as the existence of two working boxes is not immediately apparent to the other half that might perceive this to be "clutter" or "unnecessary."So I am inclined to get it working again but wanted some advice about options. I am currently assuming although can't be sure that the PSU is faulty but cannot see obvious signs of damage. With a 320GB hard drive, the Humax FOXSAT-HDR is capable of recording about 200 hours of standard definition programmes, or around 80 hours in high definition (HD). The receiver can collect the whole Freesat 7 day electronic programme guide (EPG) in around 30 seconds.

The Humax FOXSAT-HDR also has a Common Interface, which can be used for viewing encrypted channels by using a Conditional Access Module (CAM), with a valid card. No CAM modules are included with this receiver, there are currently no encrypted services listed on the Freesat EPG.The equipment is tuned properly to the same antenna equivalent to that of Freesat (28.2°/28.5° East). The quality of standard-definition pictures on this box compares very well with those of Sky and Freeview, but as with any digital TV platform the quality varies wildly depending on the broadcast quality – ITV channels, for example, look awful but the BBC’s roster looks a lot sharper and cleaner. ITV, however, is a problem. Its broadcast bit-rate is often much lower than the BBC's and it frankly looks dire in standard-definition on Freesat. We haven't seen an ITV HD broadcast yet in the few hours since installing the Foxsat-HDR but previous broadcasts viewed on the non-PVR version were superb. So as a PVR you get to do all the cool things with live TV – pause and rewind within limits, so if you need to answer the phone you can simply pause. If you need to go out to the shops, you might just choose to start recording instead. You also get to change various settings allowing you plenty of control over your recording options. With a reasonably large 320GB of memory, Humax cite 80 hours of HD content or 200 hours of SD content, but the likelihood is that you’ll have a bit of both, with a tendency to hang on to the HD content for longer, because, hey, it’s high definition.
