Fiskars 4 Claw Weeder Review: a hands-on review Fiskars 4 Claw Weeder Review: a hands-on review

Using a weeder tool gets rid of the need to use chemicals – sure, weeding tools take longer to use, but if you’re not a fan of herbicides they’re a great option. It makes weed removal fun and easy and I really mean that. This is the only tool my wife will use now to weed our allotment as she loves it that much. The stainless-steel claws of this weed remover form a circle (or diamond shape depending on how you see it). Below is a picture of the serrated, stainless-steel claws of this weed puller. The 4 serrated, stainless-steel claws of this Fiskars weed puller The price, let’s be honest it is not the cheapest tool out there. This is not a major dislike for me though as I think the quality of the tool justifies the price. Whilst these weeders don’t always work well on smaller weeds, because there’s not enough to grab onto, they’re effective at pulling larger weeds, like dandelions, out of the soil along with their roots.I don’t worry about them like some people do because I don’t believe it maintaining a lush, perfect lawn. And dandelions have edible leaves so it is like a salad growing in your yard. They’re best used on flat patches of lawn, and are useful because you don’t need to bend down to pull out the weeds. Since I don’t use herbicides in my yard I am not at risk of toxicity from eating the dandelion greens in my yard. This lightweight tool means using it isn’t fatiguing for most people, but if you are aging or suffer sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass) then even this weight could be tiring if you have lots of weeds. You still have one hand on top of the handle, and with your other hand grab the orange part of the handle where it says “Eject”. Slide that section down towards the bottom of the tool and this ejects the weed (as the name suggests). Slide the orange section down as shown by the arrow to eject the weed. Using a manual weed puller tool – like the Fiskars stand up weeder – instead of a weed killer, means that you aren’t adding to the chemicals to your soil. It is good if you can position the claws directly around the center of the dandelion. After you step down and pull the handle towards yourself you should hear the satisfy “pop” of the dandelion root snapping. The tool is inserted into the ground beside the weed, and then a levering motion is used to get the weed out of the ground. You can generally get the roots of weeds out using this method.

Some of the best weeding tools will let you pull tough weeds out by the root, often working even on well-established, deep-rooted weeds like dandelions. Others will be more effective on smaller weeds. It will leave little holes in the ground where the weed’s roots were (you could fill with clean topsoil if you want) You may find it useful to have a both a short-handled and long-handled weeding tool in your shed as they each have their own strengths and weaknesses. However, if you only want one – go for the tool that best suits the majority of the terrain that you have in your garden. I always find that seeing pictures of products in use helps me make decisions. I hope it helped you too. It tends to take quite a bit of ground with it when you remove a weed. Not a massive issue but it is worth mentioning, particularly if you plan on using this on a lawn. You also can get so many more weeds up in the same amount of time it would take you using a hand trowel for example.

Due to the aluminium and stainless-steel construction, it’s unlikely to rust so could be kept outside as well – but it’s always a better idea to keep tools out of the elements to prolong their life and avoid corrosion. The overall size of the tool is 35 cm, part of which is taken up by an ash wood handle – it’s comfortable, but can still cause blisters after time, so wearing gloves is recommended. Both the handle and the blade seem strong, and joined well – even with clay soil you won’t need to worry about anything bending or snapping. Hand weeders require you to sit or kneel and get down in the dirt. They feature a steel head that won’t break while digging in dense soil, as well as a sharpened forked tip that makes it easy to get under the root. Our Big Grip Weeder has an extra-large handle with Softgrip® for exceptional grip and comfort, while the Ergo Weeder takes it one step further with an ergonomically designed handle to reduce hand and wrist fatigue. The weatherproof ash handle, made from FSC-approved sustainably-sourced wood, is ergonomically shaped for a more comfortable grip. It should be comfortable to use for a sustained period, ultimately resulting in clear, weed-free avenues between patio stones. I don’t know how well it would work on a hard compacted soil such as an old lawn as the spikes are quite large and would require quite a bit of force to get into compacted soil.
