In Such Good Company: Eleven Years of Laughter, Mayhem, and Fun in the Sandbox – Carol Burnett (2016) For more than a decade, Clint Ober has tirelessly pursued a one-man mission to awaken a skeptical world to a simple and forgotten fact: that the Earth beneath our feet contains great healing energy and that connecting ourselves to this energy is immediately beneficial as well as intuitively and remarkably simple. De Flora et al. wrote the following: “Since the late 20th century, chronic degenerative diseases have overcome infectious disease as the major causes of death in the 21st century, so an increase in human longevity will depend on finding an intervention that inhibits the development of these diseases and slows their progress” [ 33]. For the most part, the modern structures we live in and do business in- our houses and workplaces- are also nonconductive and separate us from the Earth’s healing electrons. Think about where you spend most of your day: in an apartment, house, or office elevated from the ground, with a layer of wood, synthetic carpeting, or vinyl covering the floor. Unless you live on a dirt, cement, marble, or stone floor, it is unlikely that you are receiving any good vibes from below. Like shoes and houses, beds, to, have (d)evolved.” The tone of the book is practical and uplifting. It provides advice on how to incorporate grounding anywhere you go. It outlines ideas for every season and she even has tips for including the kids or your dog. This guide gives you everything you need to understand to put grounding to work in your daily life.

Earthing continually during rest and physical activity over a 72-hour period decreased fasting glucose among patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Patients had been well controlled with glibenclamide, an antidiabetic drug, for about 6 months, but at the time of study had unsatisfactory glycemic control despite dietary and exercise advice and glibenclamide doses of 10mg/day. The study showed that when the body is grounded, its electrical potential becomes equalized with the Earth's electrical potential through a transfer of electrons from the Earth to the body. This, in turn, prevents the 60Hz mode from producing an AC electric potential at the surface of the body and from producing perturbations of the electric charges of the molecules inside the body. The study confirms the “umbrella” effect of earthing the body explained by Nobel Prize winner Richard Feynman in his lectures on electromagnetism [ 16]. Feynman said that when the body potential is the same as the Earth's electric potential (and thus grounded), it becomes an extension of the Earth's gigantic electric system. The Earth's potential thus becomes the “working agent that cancels, reduces, or pushes away electric fields from the body.” Am having a hard time knowing what to write about this book. Part of me says snake oil/too good to be true, part of me wants to run out and buy earthing products for everyone I love. I don't know enough about physics to know if the science is sound. Mathematically, though, it seems to be me if it worked, everyone he helped would have told 10 people and they would have told 10 people and by now no one would be ungrounded and everyone would be healthy by now. To break new ground means to do something different from anything done before. If ever the term groundbreaking applies to a book, it certainly does here, literally and figuratively. This book is about the ground beneath our feet, and the revelation of a vital electrical continuum between the Earth and the living organisms that dwell upon it. And I understand too, that this book is not only about walking barefoot. It's also about buying electronic tools to help you connect with the energy. Let me say though, that considering that prana is flowing around us and inside us 100% of the time, I don't feel I need to plug in to an outlet if I want to connect on a deeper level with the life force that is everywhere. One of the co-authors, Steve Sinatra, is a cardiologist, so the chapters penned by him present a medical approach. By recognizing what being grounded feels like, you learn to recognize what it feels like when you are stressed. This book emphasizes body awareness and learning to understand how your body is responding to its environment. Once you know this, you can then take actions to correct the situation. When you are stressed, you can learn to evoke the feeling that you get when you are grounded.

This is an important book. Implementing its suggestions could vastly improve your health, perhaps be life-saving. One morning, during my long mending process, I awoke and looked outside and noticed the sky was a deeper blue and the trees were a more vibrant green than I had ever seen before. At that moment, I felt alive again but very much different from before. A stark realization came over me that I didn’t really own my home and the mountain of possessions I had. Rather, they owned me. My life had become all about taking care of my stuff. I’d spent my whole life accumulating, collecting, and taking care of it all, and trying to get more, perhaps to show off how big a success I was. I realized that I had become a slave to my possessions by my own making. At that moment, I decided to set myself free and find something to fill my life with other than possessions. ‘I don’t want anymore of this life’, I said out loud to myself. ‘I want to do something different. Whatever time I have left I want to dedicate it to something worthwhile and with purpose.’” -Clint Ober, during a turning point in his life before having the epiphany of Grounding/Earthing Another example is provided by voltage-gated ion channels, which play critical biophysical roles in excitable cells such as neurons. Local alterations in the charge profiles around these channels can lead to electrical instability of the cell membrane and to the inappropriate spontaneous activity observed during certain pathological states [ 31].

Pain reduction from sleeping grounded has been documented in previous studies [ 10, 13]. This pilot study looked for blood markers that might differentiate between grounded and ungrounded subjects who completed a single session of intense, eccentric exercise resulting in delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) of the gastrocnemius [ 21]. If markers were able to differentiate these groups, future studies could be done in greater detail with a larger subject base. DOMS is a common complaint in the fitness and athletic world following excessive physical activity and involves acute inflammation in overtaxed muscles. It develops in 14 to 48 hours and persists for more than 96 hours [ 22]. No known treatment reduces the recovery period, but apparently massage and hydrotherapy [ 23– 25] and acupuncture [ 26] can reduce pain. The Earth Prescription book by Laura Koniver is more about how to practice earthing. In this book, Koniver explains how we all know that we are addicted to our screens and online connections. Now, spending almost all of our days indoors we are disconnected from the Earth. She outlines the detrimental effects of our modern life and how we spend most of our time trapped in our thoughts. What if it was possible to make a few simple lifestyle changes and find relief from several chronic physical and mental conditions? We have reviewed three of the best earthing books so you can learn all about this natural way of healing. Many people suffer from chronic conditions like pain and inflammation, poor sleep, depression, and anxiety. The concept behind earthing, or grounding, is simple, but this practice has helped many find relief from a variety of conditions.
