As for classic-era Doctor Who, whilst studio scenes were shot in standard-definition using electronic cameras, most on-location scenes were shot on 16mm film. Where the film negatives from these shoots still exist, they have been re-scanned and combined with upscaled studio footage for their high definition BD releases.

I’m not overly knowledge on the visual effects work on Classic-Who, but I’m certain that on many of the dvd releases, having watched them all 2 years ago, you would definitely get static interlaced lines – both horizontally and vertically, and some of the very early dvd releases (The Two Doctors, Remembrance of the Daleks) were either very blurry/grainy, or frame ghost-y when it came to visual effects. Looking at the Blu Ray of S22, the image is much crisper, and it’s exposed very fine vertical lines, notably the very first Tardis scene with The Second Doctor and Jamie.
