Smart loops when enabled quantize the loops to the closest whole beat regardless of Quantize being active. This allows DJ’s who prefer to DJ with Quantize off still have accurate loops. EQ Type Settings No The knobs are so loose they fall of , a lot of them currently 6 knobs and one fader knob thingy is gone (I know easy to replace but I'm broke af) Removing the laptop tether not only frees you of some cost… it also frees you of potential issues that are out of the manufacturer’s control. For example, you don’t have to worry about some Windows/Mac OS update, or weird driver issues, getting in the way of playing music. Well, to be fair, all these systems have screens that can just as easily be stared-at as a laptop. But, at least they are at the center of where you’re working, instead of way off to the side somewhere. It too has a beautiful multi-touch capable display, but it’s reduced to 7” instead of 10, and is fixed in place (unlike its larger counterpart). This makes the PRIME 2 a more portable choice, and the cost savings may make more sense for the DJ who doesn’t want or need those extra channels/inputs.

I have used every type of DJ gear and every type of DJ software, and I forgive most differences, but there are just a few things about Engine OS (the software embedded in this unit) that irk me.The above all seems a more than fair compromise for such a tiny unit, and the feature set overall means the unit is perfectly capable of being used to DJ in a professional environment. For DJs who already own a Prime controller and want a second one for music preparation, it’s a great device – you can charge it and sit with it on your knee, laptop-style, working on your sets and music in your headphones. If you’re already maintaining a library in either Rekordbox or Engine, and you’re happy in that ecosystem, you know where to aim. Open dedicated screens to control lighting with direct colour overrides, XY movement and auto loops for intelligent “sound to light” style shows.
