About this deal

Who did you predict the killer to be at the beginning? How did your prediction of the killer morph as the story progressed? I had Conor pegged from the begging! But then, as all of the red herrings continued to pop up, I became more focused on Nana’s agent as a suspect. I think knowing you might die sooner rather than later does make a person live life differently. Death is a life-changing deadline, and I'm forever in debt to everyone who helped me outstay my welcome. I do my best to pay it forward. I try to be kind to others, as well as to myself, and rarely sweat the small stuff these days. I might not have much in terms of material possessions, but that sort of thing never really mattered to me." However, the awkward dinner is only the beginning to a harrowing evening. With the tide fully in, they can’t leave the house until daybreak. After everyone has presumably gone to bed, a scream sounds through the house. Daisy rushes downstairs to find Nana, unconscious on the kitchen floor. Blood is everywhere. At first, it seems that Nana just had a terrible, tragic fall. Then there is the fifteen-year-old Trixie- Nana’s only grandchild- who is the only one to treat Daisy with any kindness. If you love dark family secrets, a twisty plot and a stunning writing style that will give you all the atmosphere and all the chills, then this book is definitely for you. I highly recommend it!

Trixie says that despite her heart condition, she hopes to live to twenty-five and wants to travel the world. Daisy is wearing childish clothes because those are the clothes she wore the day that she died. Nana wanted Daisy to write her own story. Daisy uses Conor’s computer to start writing her story. In addition to the present drama, we also get a past perspective, taking us through Daisy's childhood and most memorable times at the Darker seaside manor. When Nana is turning 80-years old on Halloween and invites you to visit her at her tired, gothic-feeling home on a tiny, tidal island, you go. Even if you can't stand the rest of your family, you go.The story is narrated by granddaughter, Daisy Darker, Nana’s favorite, a baby born with a heart condition which caused her to die eight times before the age of thirteen.-something she said she would be concerned about-if she were a cat. 😼 Daisy Darker was born with a broken heart. Now after years of avoiding each other, Daisy Darker’s entire family is assembling for Nana’s 80th birthday party in her crumbling gothic house on a tiny tidal island. The family arrives, each of them harboring secrets. When the tide comes in, they will be cut off from the rest of the world for eight hours. Daisy Darker and her whole family assemble to celebrate Nana's 80th birthday at her mansion, "Seaglass," on a tiny island.

Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney | Goodreads

In my opinion, the best part of this book will be the one-liners (which we never usually expect in thrillers) told by the characters in multiple parts of this book. I think there are more than fifty one-liners in this book. I found each one informative, and these pearls of wisdom are placed in correct intervals and correct areas in the most effective way by the author. I will share a few of them here. In the present, someone notices that all the family’s names have been spelled out with Scrabble tiles. Also be warned that at the 38% mark there is a brief, but disturbing passage that includes the death of horses-though I wonder if Alice Feeney is actually trying to bring attention to the mistreatment of animals by including these passages in her work, as she goes on to say how high the suicide rate is among Veterinarians, because they see so much of it. And when we get to the big twist, I'm left disappointed. Part of it feels like a cop-out and the rest neither made sense nor surprised me. It's clear this was meant to take inspiration from And Then There Were None, and the author worked hard to shoehorn that association in. But it just ended up feeling forced. The ending is OTT, and in a way, it didn’t work for me, as I had to suspend my disbelief regarding both the motives and gameplay of the killer. To be fair, Rose goes to vet school AFTER that and still thought Nana was dead, which is weird. Nana says some nonsense about a meditation class in Bhutan that taught her how to breathe very slowly. Okay, Nana. Daisy goes to bed. At exactly midnight she hears a scream downstairs. She goes downstairs to find Nana dead on the kitchen floor, a gash on her head.Trixie found Nana and is the one who screamed. Lily thinks that perhaps Frank killed his mother and then took his own life. Daisy asked why he would move Nana‘s body.

Daisy told Trixie her secret and Trixie told Nana, who was horrified. Conor’s father had committed suicide after Daisy’s body was found because when he found blood on his car (he car Conor borrowed) he thought he had been the one who had killed somebody. If I were to wish upon a star, I would wish that I had written this book. Alas, I am pretty sure that doesn't work and Alice Feeney beat me to it. Perfection.Darker Family named after the color of their souls: no need to sugar coat things: they are despicable! Something I think a lot of authors forget — specifically in the thriller genre — is that just because a character is “unlikeable,” it doesn’t automatically mean they’re interesting. Case in point: most of the characters in Daisy Darker, Alice Feeney’s latest, are horrible, awful people, yes, but even worse? They’re boring. The entire book takes place in less than twenty-four hours, during a time when the family has gathered to celebrate the birthday of Nana (on Halloween!) As the leaves of autumn fall, Daisy Darker arrives at her grandmother’s house for eightieth birthday celebrations. Seaglass, the Darker’s ancestral home, is a crumbling Cornish house perched upon its own tiny private island. Daisy Darker’s family were as dark as dark can be, when one of them died all of them lied and pretended not to see . . .
