The middle setting I think would pretty much line up the mattress with the big bed. And I guess when putting the cot together you could always omit fitting the drop down side entirely for as long as the cot was next to the bed, and add it in later when it was needed! The Jenny cot isn't really designed for being a bed-side cot, but I'll go and get some measurements for you...
