The story begins with the narrator looking at his/her mother's wedding picture. The narrator notices details about his/her mother and also the man in the picture which could be his/her father. The narrator then alludes to the death of the man in the wedding picture and about the loss of religion. The picture was taken in the 1940s, so the mother seems to have been pressured to remarry shortly after the death of her first husband. Phillips writes in a dark tone that leads the reader to believe that the lives of the mother and the narrator were not easy and did not go as planned. The narrator does not seem to resent the mother, so it seems that the mother has done the best she can with the circumstances of her life. Jayne Anne Phillips’ writing hangs together, like the monologue of a rapt seer, random bits of the world fused together in the self-willed power of her vision.” With an uncanny ability to depict the lives of men and women who rarely register in American literature, Phillips writes stories that lay bare their suffering and joy. Here are the abused and the abandoned, the violent and the passive, the impoverished and the disenfranchised who populate the small towns and rural byways of the country. A patron of the arts reserves his fondest feeling for the one man who wants it least. A stripper, the daughter of a witch, escapes from poverty into another kind of violence. A young girl during the Depression is caught between the love of her crazy father and the no less powerful love of her sorrowful mother. These are great American stories that have earned a privileged place in modern literature. Director Robin Herford said, "I have lost count of the number of times I have rehearsed anew cast for this play since I directed the very first pair of actors for its world premiere. Here inthe West End, I change the cast every nine months; a process which I used to view with acertain trepidation but which I now welcome. Actors like to be doing different things anrespond to different challenges and this is a healthy process. To perform a play eight times aweek, for forty weeks, is a daunting challenge. When that play has only two speaking parts, thechallenge is even greater. At the end of forty weeks, the outgoing actors can give the play intothe hands of a new pairing of actors, and this is to give the play a new lease of life. The actorsbring to it their own imaginations and intelligences, as well as their emotional responses to thecharacters and the story."

The narrator begins the story by telling the readers that she often thinks about eating and sleeping. This could be taken as her attempt to 'fit in' and feel more 'normal'. She then discusses her love making, which evokes a sense of loneliness, especially when realizing her love making is not love making at all, but meaningless sex with strangers, as the title tells us. Throughout the entire story, Mayne does not write directly, but leaves much of the meaning of the story open to interpretation. And it's the concrete that is the problem. Last winter's bad weather has led to the concrete façade becoming pot-marked and eroded, which is why David Blyth, who was upped last month to Property Director of Ambassador Theatre Group, owner of the Fortune, is planning a major renovation of the theatre.

gritty unflinching poetic unsettling stories. been holding onto this for the right time for a long time; it was more intoxicating & harder work than i expected. deserves better than the guardian’s review: “a sort of female equivalent of our own ian mcewan” 🙄. not flawless, now - she’s strongest when working with voices & in dialogue - the stories i loved most were the ones with voice & immediacy. some of the others were flatter, both distant & somehow relentless. not for everyone, but what is? The unmistakable work of early genius trying her range, a dazzling virtuoso range, that is distinctly her own. Jayne Anne Phillips is ‘the real thing.’” This short story portrays the life of a mother and daughter—the daughter, Kate, a young graduate student struggling to pay rent and find love, and a middle-aged widowed mother in an empty house. The mother develops a brain tumor the doctors believe to be malignant. However, Kate's brother Robert doesn't wish to tell their mother. Meanwhile, Kate develops symptoms similar to her mother's: headaches, delusions, and confusion. The two struggle together against the brutality and loneliness of life as they care for one another symbiotically. Kate realizes her duty and privilege in caring for her mother as she falls ill, for Kate's mother cared for her in her times of need. The story concludes when the two ride a Ferris wheel together, and Kate's mother assures her that the storm is “going to pass over” (198), [2] symbolizing an attempt at optimism and strength through the circumstances they must face together.her intro is class: ‘characters & voices in these stories began in what is real, but became, in fact, dreams. they bear no relation to living persons, except that love or loss lends a reality to what is imagined.’

And while I’m sleeping in that hot bed everything I ever thought of having falls into em. Surrounded by the blur of her own movements, the thought of making him happy was very dear to her. She moved it from place to place, a surprise she never opened. She slept alone at night, soul of a naked priest in her sweet body. Producer Peter Wilson said today, “To have achieved 12,000 performances may not be unique, but it is remarkable. Susan Hill’s great story allied to Robin Herford’s carefully inspired direction of Stephen Mallatratt’s brilliant adaptation have kept the show fresh, exciting - and constantly in demand. I’m grateful to them all, and to the extraordinary casts and crews that have kept The Fortune Theatre busy for so long.” caption id="" align="alignright" width="240"] Design of the new seats at the Fortune Theatre, by Kirwin & Simpson containing ProBax technology from NuBax[/caption]
