Second-hand car seats will have wear and tear that could affect the safety protection. The harness, for example, could have been cleaned with harsh chemicals that can make the fabric deteriorate, or the seat could have been involved in a crash and weakened. These are things you can't tell just by looking at the seat. i-Size/R129 seats are based on a child's height (instead of weight). The new seats don't replace the weight-based seats at the moment, they just give you an alternative.

For children weighing more than 36kg (5st 10lb) but under 150cm/4ft 11in, our advice is to go by height – so wait until your child is 150cm before letting them use the vehicle seatbelt.Only an EU-approved car seat can be used in the UK. Those approved outside of the EU can't be used in the UK, and EU-approved seats can't be used in other countries, such as the US. Extended rear-facing car seats are becoming more common, though. The best place to fit your newborn car seat is the rear middle seat of your car. The next best place to install your newborn car seat/infant carrier is behind the passenger; this can be done if the middle seat doesn’t have ISOFIX anchors or a three-point seat belt for fixing the car seat in place. We don’t recommend it, but if you need to install the baby car seat in the front passenger seat, be sure to always deactivate the passenger airbag before doing so. Some child car seats have a swivel base to help you put your child into the seat, as you can turn it towards the car's door. Others have a swivel base to make it easier to switch between rearward-facing and forward-facing. The degree of swivel also varies – some can turn 360 degrees, others turn 180 degrees.Some carrycot car seats are suitable only for babies up to 10kg, which means parents might change to a forward-facing next-stage seat too early. These groups are defined by United Nations safety regulations and cover children from birth up to 12 years old or 135cm (around 36kg). It's possible to buy seats that combine one or more groups, for example group 0+/1, 0-18kg, 40-105cm, or from birth to around four-and-a-half-years old.
