You can then use the EVO 16 as a multi-channel preamp, router and rudimentary mixer without connecting it to a computer, which is ideal for location filming work. Input recording is also exemplary, helped a little with a Smart Gain feature that helps you set levels, although to be fair you don’t really need it as such (see below for more on this). With 25 years of experience behind them, Audient's mic preamps have been designed to deliver the most accurate, clean and true to source version of your audio no matter what you're recording. The EVO Preamp technology has the advantages of an analogue mic preamp combined with digitally controlled precision which gives you the ability to set your gain with pin-point accuracy! This is a highly beginner-friendly interface, and Smartgain is the best example of why. It’s represented by the larger green button. Also, the fabulous Audient JFET instrument inputs are on this device. The quality of these caught me by surprise on my iD14 when I first plugged a bass into it. Short of a dedicated high quality DI and preamp combination, this input really sounds great. Audient’s space-saving style does mean the volume knob has to take on a whole bunch of duties, though. It’s a free-turning dial with 19 white LEDs around its perimeter. Those LEDs might tell you the global volume level, the level of inputs 1 or 2, headphone output volume or the monitor mix for one of the inputs. Or act as a VU meter for your inputs, to show you when you might be getting close to clipping. The EVO 16's optical inputs and outputs have you got covered for sessions of any size! Supporting both ADAT and SPDIF, you can add up to 16 channels of mic preamps to your setup, giving you plenty of options for expanding your recording capabilities down the line. Monitor your settings via the LCD ScreenThe more I dug into what the Audient Evo 4 can do, the wider its appeal became. At this price solid performance with two inputs is enough, but there are extras for streamers and podcasters too. Performance The ID‑series interfaces are competitively priced, but on the pure value‑for‑money front, they are undercut by rival products that use mass‑market, off‑the‑shelf components and circuits. Hence the launch of Audient’s EVO series of interfaces, brought to market more affordably by the use of generic audio circuitry instead of the Audient custom designs employed in the ID series. But price isn’t the only thing differentiating the EVO interfaces from their ID brethren. Tabula Rasa
