This book is a marvelous exercise in hard sci-fi—Mr. Taylor clearly did his research on every aspect, from space stations to interstellar travel to artificial intelligences. The Bobs make a few derisive references to “hand-waving about nanomachines” in sci-fi, which made me smile since I have been guilty of just that. While obviously any science-fiction work is bound to have some unexplained elements—it has to, otherwise it wouldn’t be fiction—the amount of research and scientific knowledge that went into We Are Legion is impressive. Mission Control: Of a sort. Instead of exploring the universe like the other Bobs, he decides to set up a permanent residence around Epsilon Eridani and serves as a sort of communications hub for the other Bobs (even inventing Bob-Net, the Subspace Ansible mentioned below). In September 2020, Taylor released his sixth novel Heaven's River, a sequel in the "Bobiverse" series. The new novel follows a loose thread from the earlier novels involving the Bob clone named "Bender", who had disappeared mysteriously many years before and prompts a galaxy-spanning search. Dropped a Bridge on Him: He gets killed in a bombing shortly after Bob leaves Earth. Bob doesn't even get to say goodbye.

The Knights Who Say "Squee!": He jumps at the opportunity to go to the Vulcan home star. When he discovers twin worlds, he immediately names them Vulcan and Romulus. Well this is an interesting little gem! "Bobiverse" gives you a reasonable expectation of just how serious and in-depth the author is aiming at and there is definitely an almost young adult feel to some of the writing and narration. However, there is cleverness here too, once the author gets into the implications of a software generated mind controlling advanced technology the whole thing expands and becomes rather inventive. The Bobiverse term suddenly makes sense. Buster has mated, tents have become widespread, Deltan population growth issues lead to gang activity

Bob Johansson, affectionately referred to as Bob, used to be an engineer in 21st century. He signed up to have his head preserved cryogenically upon his death just for future resuscitation to a new body. However, in a strange and ironic twist of fate, he died in less than 24 hours after doing so. He woke up a century later only to find out that his new body was in form of a type of computer program. Bob Johansson had become a replicant. Bob’s mission was becoming an artificial intelligence manning interstellar probe for searching for habitable planets. It later turns out that The USA wasn’t the only nation that was planning to lay claims as being the first nation to seek out the new worlds. Dr. Doucette: Female assistant to Dr. Landers who works with Bob (v2) when Dr. Landers is unavailable. Bob Johansson wakes up many years later only to find out that the corpsicles have already been declared to be without any rights, and Bob is now the state property. He has already been uploaded to computer’s hardware and he’s slated to become the controlling AI in the interstellar probe that’s looking for the habitable planets. Stakes are high here: no lesser than the 1st claim to whole worlds. If Bob declines this honor, he shall be switched off, and in turn, they will try again with another person. If he decides to accept, he will become a prime target. As the story unfold, there are 3 other countries that are trying to get their probes launched first, and so they play dirty. A young Deltan that displays an abnormally high intelligence compared to his peers. Ends up being mentored and befriended by Bob to aid the Deltan society.

This examination of multiple aspects of the same personality by spreading it across different characters is really interesting to me. It reminded me of the different incarnations of the Nameless One in Planescape: Torment. And I think you all know what high praise that is, coming from me.

Benevolent A.I.: The Bob clones. While most of the people in the FAITH government are terrified of him, Dr. Landers recognizes that he'd be more than happy to help without his loyalty switches. Once Bob removes them, he proves to still have the best interests of humanity at heart. I was getting desperate, all of my favourite series of books ‘Arisen’, ‘The Undead’ and ‘Expeditionary Force’ have either finished or waiting for the next in the series. I was… who am I kidding, ‘I am’… out of money! Truthfully I am so poor I walk down the street with one shoe, people ask me ‘did you lose a shoe?’ and I just say ‘No… I found one!’ The series is centered about Bob Johansson who has just sold off his software company and he’s looking forward to having a luxurious. There are m many places to go, several movies to watch and a lot of books to read. So, it’s rather a little bit unfair when Bob gets killed when crossing the street. So, I've been seeing this book around for a long time. And for just as long I thought the title seemed stupid, and so I avoided looking at it. Even after I read the description, I thought it sounded derivative and uninteresting, so I still avoided reading it. And then for no apparent reason, Nathan Lowell recommended it. Now, if you have any sense, when the reigning master of must-read, different-than-anything-else Science Fiction tells you to read something, you sit up and pay attention.

WE ARE LEGION (WE ARE BOB), you have to admit at the very least, has a very intriguing title. It’s the sub-title that gets me. Turns my expectations from “a ubiquitous group of many individuals” to “a group of many instances of a single individual”, and at once makes me wonder just what I’m going to find. Naming Your Colony World: When the Bobs first approach a new star system, they use the standard Numbered Homeworld approach. If the surveying Bob decides a world should be a colonization target, he renames it - usually using some sort of Shout-Out. Of particular note are the first habitable worlds Milo discovered - Vulcan and Romulus, of the Omicron 2 Eridani system. Heliosphere: this is a bubble like region of space that surrounds and is created by plasma emitted from the sun. Galactic cosmic rays (fantastic four) are less abundant in the heliosphere.
