About this deal

Evacuees: another subject that I never get tired of reading about! It's just such an interesting situation, ASKING to be dramatised in fiction really. Kids being whisked away from their parents and randomly slotted into other people's families, adjusting to life in the country after growing up in the city, living with total strangers, overcrowded little country villages rationing and making do, resentment and suspicion, everyone secretly terrified and uncertain because of the war. There was also a really cunning secret when her mum explained about the little trip but didn't explain about being evacuated. This book made me think about how important it is that we remind ourselves to be bold and stand tall when Shirley said “I put both my thumbs under my chin and pushed upwards. Chin up, Shirley, I commanded” I loved this story because I have learnt much about World War 2, so it was really interesting hearing a story of some kids that were actually there. This book inspired me to learn some more about the war and other people’s experiences. I also really like Jacqueline's books because of how they mostly focus on one person and how they are feeling about the world around them.

It’s no picnic but it’s a way of keeping yourself going and better than the alternative,” she laughs.

I also liked how Jacqueline Wilson left the story on a cliff hanger. I was really wondering by the end, did Shirley's dad die in the war? Was her Mum okay? What happened to all the children? Did they stay safe in the red house? Did Shirley's friend Jessica live happily with her granny after she was expelled from her school? Did Shirley ever see her again? All these questions were going round my head after I had finished the book. I enjoyed the book so much that I wished the book would go on and on forever. September, 1939: At the breakout of the Second World War, ten-year-old Shirley is sent away on a train. She doesn't know where she's going, or what's going to happen to her when she gets there. All she has been told is that she's going on 'a little holiday'.

It was really fun at points when Archie was running about in the striped jumper and then when they were playing as soldiers and when Shirley showed them her knife. This book was both worrying to read and exciting. I would like to read more Jacqueline Wilson books. Wave Me Goodbye used real events from World War Two some consisted of having a gas mask at all times and needing a name tag to state who you are, where you are going and where you come from an example is:

At a time in life when most people are taking it easy, Jacqueline is a literary powerhouse and shows no sign of slowing down. In fact, she is utterly defiant towards the idea. Made shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, it was Fields' last British film. [3] It was shot at Islington Studios with sets designed by Alex Vetchinsky. [4] Cast [ edit ] Jacqueline Wilson wrote her first novel when she was nine years old, and she has been writing ever since. She is now one of Britain’s bestselling and most beloved children’s authors. She has written over 100 books and is the creator of characters such as Tracy Beaker and Hetty Feather. More than forty million copies of her books have been sold. As well as winning many awards for her books, including the Children’s Book of the Year, Jacqueline is a former Children’s Laureate, and in 2008 she was appointed a Dame. Jacqueline is also a great reader, and has amassed over 20,000 books, along with her famous collection of silver rings. In 2008 Jacqueline suffered heart failure and had a defibrillator fitted. Her kidneys were damaged. She admits the dialysis often made her tired. When she gets off the train no one wants to take her so a lady is forced to take her and two boys .

The house where she ends up staying has a secret room, one where no one is allowed to enter. She finds the key one day goes in and discovers a giant doll's house. There's lots of questions to be answered which she discovers as the story moves on. It adds up wonderfully, in that it’s perfectly possible to write two quite long books a year without too much stress.”
