About this deal

There are some strong associations between alcohol and different types of cancer; ultimately alcohol is a poison. What is alcohol really giving you in your life besides ranging hangovers, feeling like shit in the morning and not having any energy to work out?" We've been conditioned to drink our entire lives. We're told alcohol calms and relaxes us, gives us courage, gets us through parties and work events, and makes us happy. Yet no one wants to admit that they're influenced."

This Naked Mind by Annie Grace Book Review The Sober Curator

Between her narrative, Grace intersperses a series of Liminal Points that challenge our ingrained beliefs about alcohol. Questions such as “Is drinking a habit?” “Are we really drinking for taste?” and “Does drinking make me happy?” are asked and answered in a manner that explains how our experiences, observations, assumptions, conclusions, and beliefs (a deliberately recurring theme) have led us to our current situation. Eye-opening to me were making the connection between advertisements and alcohol, how we're conditioned to seeing benefits in something that, rationally, has absolutely none. How it doesn't wield the power to make us happy, but how we're just lead into thinking that it's what makes us enjoy situations and people.I’ve never been happier. I am having more fun than ever. It’s as if I have woken up from the Matrix and realized that alcohol was only dulling my senses and keeping me trapped rather than adding to my life. I know you may find this hard, if not impossible, to believe. That’s OK. But I can give you the same freedom, the same joy, and the same control over alcohol in your life. I can take you on the same journey—a journey of facts, neuroscience, and logic. A journey that empowers you rather than rendering you powerless. A journey that does not involve the pain of deprivation. It's because alcohol is highly addictive, changes the chemical components like dopamine in your brain and over time, you become more and more addicted to it. It's really hard to stay a moderate drinker. The author hasn't re-invented the wheel, what she has done is write a great book that presents plenty of information on how our brains are wired into believing alcohol is, and should, play a part in our life. And this is where the "wow" moment for me was. Alcohol does NOT relax the body because it actually releases cortisol (the stress hormone) in the body.

Annie Grace, author of This Naked Mind and the leader of this burgeoning addiction treatment movement, is an overachiever. She grew up in a log cabin without electricity, yet went on to become the youngest VP of a major multinational corporation. In spite of this, or in part because of it, she became an alcoholic. As an overachiever, she realized this was negatively impacting her life on many levels, and she set out to find out what was involved in quitting. I’ve been going through a similar set of questions personally, as I look at my life in my mid-sixties, and at things I want to change.Truth rests with the minority . . . because the minority is generally formed by those who really have an opinion.” —Søren Kierkegaard”

The book does contain some real science, but what is there--the kind of information I was really wanting--is delivered in the most dry, textbook-y way imaginable. And the practical advice? Essentially nonexistent. "Tips" like "you have to starve those cravings, allow them to die" followed by doomsday predictions of you in the gutter provide no real tools. Speaking from personal experience, I can tell you that Annie’s method works. I can also tell you that it only works if you are 100% committed to making a change. To this end, she cleverly adds a caveat at the beginning of Chapter 22: The Secret to Happily and Easily Drinking Less, warning the reader that skipping ahead to this chapter will not be effective if you haven’t done the work outlined in previous chapters. She’s right. There is no easy way out, but if you do the work, you can succeed. 75% of people who recover from alcohol dependence do so without seeking professional help MOVIE NIGHT WITH THE SOBER CURATOR: The Best TV Shows, Movies, and Documentaries About Addiction & Recovery This book has helped change the course of my life. I was not a heavy drinker (one glass of wine per night, bit more on the weekends), just someone who wanted to cut down. It's written in such a way that you get the benefits of this thinking (meaning, the changes to your unconsciousness in how you think about the effects of alcohol - something you have been mislead about since birth) by just reading. The author has been inspired in this method by Dr Sarno (who is the author to read if you have any chronic pain; spoiler: it might be caused by your brain!).
