About this deal

Mandasue Heller on The Accidental Medium I loved The Accidental Medium. A hilarious journey into a ghostly world of psychics and the like that’s guaranteed to put you in high spirits. I’m no clairvoyant, but trust me, this medium is about to go large! Highly addictive with a main character that keeps you laughing even when faced with ghosts. I could not get enough, I devoured this book and wanted more. I really enjoyed this book, Tanz is such a great character and there are a lot of laugh out loud moments, as well as some spooky ones, in this book. It's such a fun, cheeky, easy read. It's quirky, cosy and entertaining. It even had some relatively dark and emotional parts that were heavier than I'd anticipated in this book - but overall it was delightful. I loved the descriptions of foods and scents, even in candles! This book made my tummy rumble and really had me wanting to pour a glass of wine to enjoy the chapters with but I'm not currently drinking at all so I had to settle for hot ribena and lime & sodas haha. Gin Palace follows Tanz, a young woman who is still in the process of developing and honing her new powers as a medium. After the events in the first book she really does not want anything at all to do with ghosts anymore, but the ghosts have other ideas.

This was heading for five stars until that point. Now I feel like four might have been overly generous. In retrospect, there were a fair few avenues that were only superficially explored.I found this book to be missing the heart of the previous book. With this book, the warmth and the heart of the book only seemed to creep in towards the end, but I'm thankful that it is there as it's what this series is all about in my opinion. This books ending was just great, and it kind of saved the book for me - i just wish there was more of that throughout the book and not just the end. Thuli Madonsela speaks about the importance of SA's political future in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. I'd recommend this to people who like the Riversy of London series, or who're looking for something like The Dresden Files with a female and more witchy twist. Love the plot of this one and all the history embedded into the story line! I think I enjoyed this book even more than the first one! I love the idea of solving 100 year old murder and how everything was some how all connected and all came together in the end!

This story grabbed me immediately, it didn't take me an blink to get attached to the protagonist and immerse myself in the story that she had to buy. The TV job pays but Tanz does not have the most glamorous of roles - that goes to established TV star Caroline. Caroline is a prize bitch however this hides her own demons which Tanz is able to help her with, but also gaining insight into her own life. I enjoyed the majority of this book as the concept was interesting and it was an easy read. However, it proved to be rather problematic due to the amount of casual misogyny, transphobia, and fatphobic comments made from Tanz, the main character. Not to mention the blatant stereotyping of the gay characters and her dislike of Martin as he isn’t as ‘fabulous’ as the other gay men in her life, such as best friend Milo, who is characterised as being sassy and flamboyant. The protagonist had an air of ‘not like other girls’ about her as she constantly put down Elsa for being interested in her appearance and commented how she finds it easier to have male friends as opposed to female friends. These were common themes throughout its entirety which were very uncomfortable and annoying to read.Of all the people (alive and not) introduced, I think I enjoyed Frank the most. I wish we had had some more interaction with him, but perhaps this will happen in a later book. I absolutely loved this book. I needed to have a get lost in a book moment or two, so I bought the previous book The Accidental Medium. If you’re wondering, you can read them as standalone books, but they are so humorous and interesting, for the sheer escapism I’d say buy the books! There’s a little bit of everything in them. Scenes that repeat alot, or are unnecessary to the main plot, unnecessarily dragged out scenes, or scenes that are way too short.

This book is a little more serious than the first one! But it still has its snippy one liners and no nonsense attitude about it! I love how common and open the character is. Like how she openly talks about starting her period, how shit sex was with someone - it's like talking to your friends and that's why I think it's such an enjoyable read. It's so chill and relaxed. The two-time Oscar winner is set to direct the pilot for the Fox period drama The Middle Man, the network announced Friday.  Screen Actors Guild Awards - Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series - nominated Cue a job and a change of scenery with a host of new quirky characters, Tanz starts flexing some spiritual muscle and encounters a malevolent spirit that may just be her undoing. As I have been getting more and more into the supernatural, tarot and spirituality lately I absolutely loved that element to the book too of course! The episode where Tanz gets to know the rest of the acting team is very funny. She struggles with her costume, her makeup and most of all the behaviour of bitchy Caroline. Because Whitwell is a trained actor, her descriptions of the less glamorous side of the profession are realistic. The fact that Tanz leads a chaotic lifestyle adds to the humour. I enjoyed this book as it took my down memory lane to my years in the North East and Newcastle. It was also in Tyneside that I went with a friend to see my first clairvoyant - an interesting experience.
