About this deal

The new Speedpaints are initially available in the Mega Paint Set 2.0, which contains 50 paints, out on April 22 in 2023. A complete set and metallic paint set are following soon thereafter. In Summer there will also be a new starter set, and a Most Wanted set, which will have all of the original 24 Speedpaints but with the new formula.

My only real complaint is that I had a couple blowouts while using them, launching the nozzle off the bottle, and pouring paint all over my palette. You see, each Speedpaint comes with a mixing ball inside it, which I would normally consider a big win. However, I think what happened is that, when turning the bottle over, the mixing ball formed a seal against the under-side of the nozzle. When a gentle squeeze didn’t give me that nice drop of paint I was looking for, I ketchup bottle’d it with a firm squeeze and shake, causing the nozzle to pop off.

What is Speedpaint 2.0?

Maize Yellow is another favorite color of mine. Yellow is notoriously difficult to paint, and Maize Yellow feels like cheating.

In total, the Speedpaint Mega Set 2.0 features 46 colours, 3 metallics, and 1 Speedpaint Medium - a total of 50 bottles - enabling you to paint beautiful tabletop-quality miniatures in no time! Simply apply one rich coat of Speedpaint directly over a primed miniature and you are done. All colours are using tried and true high-quality heavy pigments. Next, I had my brand-new HQ addition to my list, the Nerotyrant, and with that, my love of Goddess Glow really came through. The speed paint does an amazing job with its color and simplicity, and I didn’t feel any need to use a wash over the paint I was already using. Again, I used the Bony Matter paint, and then I moved into using the Raging Sea paint for the brain matter. For the pipeing that is on the base, I used the Ashen Stone paint which again, was amazing with its coverage. Here are 5 Best Practices to get the most from this awesome new technique to add to your hobby arsenal. To find out which Speedpaints reactivate and which do not, I painted all of them on my trusty sheet of plasticard and let them dry for over 24 hours, to make sure that really all of the medium has evaporated. I’m using Spaceship Exterior Warpaint to paint over the left halves, and Corax White over the right halves, which are both very light greys. As you can see, no matter which Speedpaint I’m painting over, the paint reactivates and discolours my acrylic paint. Neither Warpaints or Citadel paints make a difference.

Apart from that concern, we’ve got no complaints with this new reformulation. They’re easy to use, work exactly as advertised, and boast rich saturation and good coverage. They also work fantastically in an airbrush right out of the bottle as a tint or diluted with Speedpaint 2.0 Medium as a glaze (make sure you use 2.0 Medium with 2.0 paints). With any new paint product or technique, there’s always a bit of a learning curve to get the best results. With Speedpaint, that learning curve isn’t so steep. For this Speedpaint 2.0 review I took a few more samples from the new range. I tried to reactivate the paints after 30 minutes, 2 and 24 hours. But as soon as I got my hands on the Speedpaint dropper bottles, the first thought I had was “I bet I could airbrush with this.” And I gotta say I’m pretty happy with the results. The new formulation flows easily into recesses and offers enough drying time that you can move it around to prevent pools. Unlike Contrast paints, which all behave a little differently, I found the Speedpaint line to be consistent in both viscosity and coverage. While there are lighter and darker colors, the paints themselves all behave the same way as I move them from bottle, to palette, to brush, to model. This alone saves time and made it easy to get up and running.

Now, these little experiments are all well and good, but what does that mean for practical use? I have to say that unless you paint over with a very light colour, you will hardly notice any reactivation with Speedpaint 2.0. Even then, unlike the old Speedpaints, there is no varnishing needed. One or two additional layers of paint will pretty much remove the bleeding completely. On the Stormcast’s robes I layered and highlighted over Speedpaint that cured for about 20 minutes. As the highlight colours are quite similar, bleeding is not an issue at all. Layering and highlighting over the robes of a Stormcast Eternal painted with Beowolf Blue If you’re plugged into hobby social media at all you’ve surely heard of The Army Painter’s Speedpaint line. They released hot on the heels of Citadel’s industry-shaking Contrast line, promising to provide a similar one-coat experience. We here at Goonhammer have been using them for quite some time, and figured it was high time we shared our thoughts and favorite paints. Vallejo just recently entered the one coat game just recently with their Xpress Color range, which comprises 23 colours plus Xpress Color medium: Tutorial: How to paint Gallowdark Space Hulk terrain from Kill Team: Into the Dark September 10, 2022 Thanks for the review. Reactivation is a deal-killer for many painters, and I also dislike how other video “reviewers” don’t mention it. I guess the need for free product is great. Anyway, Goobertown Hobbies created a DIY contrast mix, and NotifyGrout posted his version on Lead Adventurers. It uses the same materials as Les Bursley’s wash, which I’ve been using for years and which the erstwhile Secret Weapon Miniatures used for their wash line.

5 Best Practices

And here is the sheet for The Army Painter’s Speedpaints, which I just recently updated to cover all 89 colours of the Speedpaint 2.0 range. I wanted to try something a bit different with Speedpaints. But before we get to that, let’s go with something traditional. The first thing to understand is that the latter two paint ranges have a very different formula than Contrast or Speedpaint. They are not based on dye, but on thinned acrylic pigments. Think of Citadel Nihiliakh Oxide or regular acrylic paints thinned with a lot of Contrast Medium. For my The Army Painter Speedpaint review, I painted Contrast, Speedpaints, Instant Colors from Scale 75, and Antithesis paints from Warcolours on a sheet of plasticard that I primed with Corax White primer. I photographed the sheet under 5500K neutral light to reproduce the colours as authentically as possible. All Speedpaints come with two high-grade, rust-proof stainless steel Mixing Balls already loaded in the bottle, making it easier for you to get the perfect consistency.
