Sunday Highlights". The Nebraska State Journal. April 30, 1944. p.32 . Retrieved March 31, 2015– via Newspapers.com. The redemptive power of attachment – to both people and places – is at the heart of The Snow Goose, a touching novella by American writer Paul Gallico. Abandoning his pre-war career as a sports journalist for the New York Daily News, Gallico moved to the small Devon town of Salcombe and surrounded himself with a menagerie of cats and dogs, enthusiastically embarking on a new career as a writer of short stories. And the bleak, rugged splendour of the British coastline seeps into The Snow Goose, a book that received a sniffy response from some contemporary critics (“One must have a heart of stone not to read The Snow Goose without laughing”– Julian Symons) but became a firm favourite with a wartime British public who were understandably not averse to a dose of warm-hearted sentimentality. The book is about an artist, living in a solitary lighthouse - Philip Rhayader, a local girl - Fritha, their friendship symbolized by the wounded bird - the snow goose. The actions take place during World War II. This book is really to hard to write about. Very personal to me - the emotional plane is really deep and the characters are well-developed.

"Winter reads: The Snow Goose by Paul Gallico", The Guardian, December 19, 2011 Though his name was well-known in the United States, he was an unknown in the rest of the world. In 1941, the Snow Goose changed all that, and he became, if not a best-selling author by today's standards, a writer who was always in demand. Apart from a short spell as a war correspondent between 1943 and 1946, he was a full-time freelance writer for the rest of his life. He has lived all over the place, including England, Mexico, Lichtenstein and Monaco, and he lived in Antibes for the last years of his life.Who would ever think that a short story could be so captivating? I shall never forget this book that brought me to tears in such short of time, unlike most books, This was truly a Christmas story although it was not meant to be. I never like sombre outcomes but most of this novel is very beautiful. The loyalty and respect for life to which it is dedicated is uplifting, like the feeling of beholding these remarkable marsh birds with your own eyes. My province is built on a marsh. I know how ecologically essential this kind of terrain is to Earth as a whole. This story though beautiful filled me with melancholy. It feels other-worldly, and I experienced a sense of faerie or spiritualness about it. Philip Rhayader has isolated himself due to being rejected for his warped and ugly outward appearance. He lives in "one of the last of the wild places of England" and cares for the wild birds there, and eventually comes to care for a young girl who brings him an injured snow goose. Finally, he embarks on a journey to rescue men stranded at Dunkirk. The book was even better than I remembered it. Part historical fiction/part love story, it was well worth the re-read.

In 2014, an excerpt from The Snow Goose was set as a comprehension passage in the Annual ISC Examinations conducted by CISCE. Unless it’s not aimed at kids and it’s supposed to be for teenagers and older? Except it looks like too much of a kid’s book to appeal to any teens. I know when I was in high school, I only had eyes for books by Terry Pratchett, Stephen King and Douglas Adams, steering well clear of anything for kids. The Snow Goose: A Story of Dunkirk is a novella by the American author Paul Gallico. [10] Allusions and references to real things [ edit ] For the looming presence of war, a darkening shadow throughout the duration of the story, ultimately tears them apart. Rhayader takes his tiny boat across the channel to assist with the 1940 Dunkirk evacuation, an act of selfless bravery that costs him his life. And, as he dies, he is accompanied by the snow goose, circling above. The bird – and, by extension, Frith – is with him. And a touching suggesting that Rhayader’s spirit enters the bird, uniting with the snow goose’s encapsulation of Frith’s unspoken love for him, provides bittersweet redemption for them both. It’s a fitting, haunting conclusion to a book that depicts a complicated, fragile relationship with sensitivity and care.
