About this deal

I found Rose quite interesting because she’s supposed to be a lady but she’s quite ambitious anyway. I didn’t not like any characters. Aaaaa I wish my eldest still read these books! Must get my younger two looking at them #readwithme Post a Reply Another in the Hetty Feather series, with - brace yourselves now - a headstrong young girl who doesn't like being told what to do! Oh, and she likes drawing! And reading! Can you believe it? a painter also, encourages her she can't help but fall a little for Paris as he's older but shows her attention. As Paris is commissioned to paint a portrait of her mother, Rose gets the chance to spend time with him where he encourages her greatly. She discovers she is a talented comedy sketch artist where as painting isn't her forte.

Mama always tuts when she sees my drawings. She doesn’t approve of them at all. Papa laughs and thinks them funny, but he says that I should start drawing seriously now. He is hoping that I have true artistic ability. It’s not just because he is an indulgent father (though he is!). He’d like at least one of his children to have inherited his talent. Rupert is the eldest but has never had the patience or indeed any natural ability at art. I am his twin and only fifteen minutes younger, so now Papa is pinning his hopes on me. I'm probably far too old for JW, but as a school librarian I always enjoy an opportunity to read her newer books, and this was perhaps my favourite! There's this small section that pushed the rating up. It seemed like Clover was speaking to every upper-class condescending character in JW books (trust me, there's more than you'd think): It was impressively accurate, except from the representation problem mentioned above. I don't know why I'm impressed, considering how many of these JW's published, but it's still cool. I'm planning to take a History GCSE, and this actually does help. She wouldn’t listen to Papa, and insisted that her sons had to be properly educated, which meant sending them to Kilbourne. Grandpapa insisted too, though he didn’t go to public school himself. Grandpapa generally has the final say, because he is the provider. Papa calls him the Great Provider. He doesn’t say it in a very Christian way. Amy, Bella, Chloe, Daisy and Emily – aka the Alphabet Club – are best friends. Daisy is the newest member and so she’s trying really hard to fit in. But when the girls all start planning sleepover parties for their birthdays, Daisy can’t help but worry about hers… Then Rupert and I were born, and the grandparents were delighted, in spite of everything. They were especially pleased to have a grandson to inherit their business. Rose Rivers is the main character of the book of the same name. She is the fraternal twin of Rupert. She lives as the eldest daughter of a wealthy Victorian family. Throughout the book Rose expresses her dislike of her life feeling lonely and unwanted several times throughout the novel. She struggles to make friends, especially with those of a similar social standing, eventually she befriends Clover moon who works for her family as a nursery maid.

She didn’t tell us this, of course. While Grandpapa was sorting out some problem with a mill hand, the foreman took Rupert and me for a cup of tea and a slice of Keiller’s Dundee cake. He asked after our grandmama and told us that he’d known her when she was ‘a wee lassie working here’. We boggled at the thought, but neither of us quite dared question Grandmama about this later. Rupert suggested that she wears such strong perfume now because she’s determined to smell sweet. All in all, I found this novel very interesting and I have taken in a lot of information on different perspectives and how lives were in the Victorian times. I now feel I could reflect on my new knowledge, which could then make my actions more thankful and generous. It could also perhaps lead me into being more understanding with other people’s problems and maybe more giving to others who are less able or unfortunate.

Rose was a very unlikeable narrator. She is a dark-haired, rebellious, pale-skinned, plain child who loves drawing and writing. Oh, where have I seen that before? Papa’s praise obviously means a great deal, because he is the painter Edward Rivers, well known in artistic circles. He is a follower of the great Pre-Raphaelite painters, and when he was a young man he was considered equal to them in talent. He was also wild and bohemian. He even had a pet wombat, just like his hero, Rossetti. You thought you were being so kind and splendid making friends with a girl like me, but when you saw that brooch so obviously planted in my bed, you thought I was a common thief like all the others." How can I wait five whole years anyway?’ I said instead. ‘Couldn’t I go to a boarding school where they have a good art teacher?’
