About this deal

Practical Motorhome is part of Future plc, an international media group and leading digital publisher. Ensuring the tyres on both your car and your caravan are at the right pressure before heading off on tour won’t only keep you safe – it could also help save you money. Some reports estimate that if your tyre pressures are even just a little bit too low, your fuel economy could be up to 10% worse. Some years ago I bought a RING RAC900 tyre inflator. All was well, but at that time I had a 12v battery “spare” . My leisure battery is not that accessible, so this worked well. At home, in the drive, but not on the move. This one looks the business but I am concerned that it may be too technical for us in that it needs to be connected directly onto the battery. Is this a relatively easy thing to do? (Can I connect the terminals to my leisure battery without disconnecting the motorhome terminals?)

Ring RAC900 - Practical Caravan

Your tyre inflator will either feature an old-fashioned gauge display or a digital one. Digital air compressors give a clear, easy-to-read format, whereas gauges can be disrupted by the compressor and tend to move about quite a bit when it’s in use. Good features included long air hoses and power leads, which make positioning the compressor much easier – cordless devices were even better. We also noticed that some higher power models attach directly to a battery’s terminals, which is an advantage when you are either inflating or deflating a tourer’s tyres because of the close proximity of the leisure battery. When it comes to searching for the best tyre inflator, there are a huge number of great products to choose from. If you have better things to do than trawl through comparisons of different tyre inflators, we recommend going for the highly popular and reliable AA 12V Digital Tyre Inflator. As it stands though I’m more likely to reach for my more convenient battery-powered pump when it comes to squeezing a few extra PSI into my tyres.Cordless tyre inflators are becoming increasingly popular, however, you should still look for a model that offers an additional power source, such as your vehicle’s 12V port or direct connection to your battery. Over time, your batteries could lose charge and you may find yourself stranded. https://forums.outandaboutlive.co.uk/forums/Motorhomes/Motorhome-Matters/Tyre-valve-extension/50787/ If you happen to travel regularly for lengthy periods, particularly overseas, as I do, then carrying some tyre inflation device is definitely to be recommended IMO.

https://www.halfords.com/motoring/motorcycling/motorcycle-accessories/oxford-valve-access-tool-461062.html Inflating a motorhome tyre with a portable 12 volt compressor is likely to burn out the motor before the tyre is up to pressure. And it will take an eternity. It has worked faultlessly many times but they do have limitations, I never run continuously for long periods, which would be needed for inflating a large tyre from near flat. Practical Caravan is part of Future plc, an international media group and leading digital publisher. The underlying concept is good advice, but I would use a pair of Anderson, standard grey SB50 connectors, and include an adequately rated fuse close to the positive battery pole.

Ring Automotive RAC900 Professional High Power Air Compressor

I was holding both in one hand and the camera in the other.. set on macro.. not a great idea for a clear photo.. The inflation rate quoted is ‘under four minutes to get a tyre from flat to 35PSI’. By contrast, the Ring RAC900, for instance, takes just one minute and 40 seconds to inflate a tyre to 35PSI. I also have had a halfords one for about 5 years - seems bomb proof - use it for m/h, car, motorbike, pushbike - the works + the gauge seems accurate! The robust metal body and anti-vibration feet make this a durable inflator, ideal for trade use. Has an analogue dial that shows pressure in PSI, kPA, bar and lb/cm2. Comes with valve adaptor set and storage case.

Professional High Power Air Compressor, 280W - Ring

At first glance, this unit appears to be a more powerful tyre compressor than the Ring RAC 630 Digital Air Compressor + Inflator & Deflatorand the Ring RAC640 Digital Air Compressor + Inflator & Deflator, which we were also testing, while being a budget version of Ring’s professional RAC900 unit. The power consumption of the RAC900 is 280 Watts. That’s equivalent to 5 car headlamp bulbs of 55 Watts each. This is much more than a cigar lighter which is often 180Watts. And it’s continuous throughout the time you’re pumping the tyre. When I’ve finished inflating the tyre to a higher pressure than required I measure the pressure with a gauge I trust. One like a cylinder with a piston that is pushed out after the pressure has worked against a spring. Then I let the pressure down bit by bit until it is correct. Those gauges have a shaped knob on the end to press the tip of the valve in to let air out. These are called pencil gauges, e.g. pencil gauge POWERFUL INFLATION: inflates a 13” tyre from flat to 35psi in 90 seconds. Powered directly from a 12V battery to give the fastest possible inflation. If you can’t find the help needed on our DIY blog then why not head over to our forum where you can can help from both tradesmen and other DIY experts. Once connected, the LCD screen indicated the PSI on my Citroen C1’s front right tyre in a matter of seconds. Target adjustment was another painless process as only the middle dial needed to be turned for me to reach my desired PSI target. So my “slave battery “ option is not unreasonable, but has payload issues, if you have payload issues with your van. The RAC 900 is a 30Amp machine, hence if on full load is 3 times over a "ciggy lighter's" rating as cyberyacht points out. I keep mine at home as accessing directly onto my car's battery is "challenging". Use it to set your target pressure and the compressor will do the rest, cutting out when it reaches its target to prevent over inflation. Complete with an integrated LED light for extra safety and ease of use, this model also comes with a two-piece adaptor set for your inflatable accessories.

That's OK until you get these 'ere noo-fangled pressure indicators that nag you if you dare to run at anything other than the max that was set in the factory. Pagination: Showing 1 - 10 of 17 Other than road rescuers, this would suit camping and caravanning supremely well, where you’ve got a bit of extra space to carry it and perhaps a leisure battery to hook it up to. Ring could extend its usefulness by offering this pump with a couple of different power leads though. If it was easy enough to fit a three-pin plug for example, I’d happily leave this handy unit set up in my garage. While this 12V digital air compressor is not the most accurate nor the most durable, it is handy and stores neatly in your car boot. Unfortunately, the instructions are very poor and we’d advise you to try it out several times on arrival to familiarise yourself with the product. But while the speed is great, niceties such as a digital gauge, an auto-stop function and lights, are conspicuous by their absence. On the plus side, you get a 7m-long coiled hose between the compressor and the screw-on tyre-valve coupling, and the compressor itself can be up to 2.4 metres from the battery, thanks to long power leads that clamp directly to the battery’s terminals.

There is an ON/OFF switch at the motor end of the casing with a nice translucentrubber dust cover over it. I don’t know if it is completely waterproof. a T connector with an isolating valve with a push fitting connector, and a length of air hose with a tyre inflator would be required.. I had this on my RV which had air brakes and self levelling suspension.. To be honest if I faced a total flat then the associated whole issue of me doing the spare wheel change and inflation at the roadside is now something "management" would veto, and it becomes Green Flag's task. As I’ve said here in the past, I have a T-Max pump that’s conceptually similar to the RAC900. When used at home I power it from a ‘slave’ 12V battery (because this is convenient and I have a couple of spare batteries) and I store the pump in a handy niche under my motorhome’s bed. If I had to use the pump away from home I’d either power it from the jump-start points or from the leisure battery . Diving straight in, the RAC830 was straightforward to use straight out of the box. I had the pressure readout adjusted (PSI, KPA and BAR are offered) and the correct pressure selected in a couple of seconds and without any swearing. The sturdy but limited controls play favourably with this tyre inflator. An on/off button, a dial, and the light button.
